OKso here is my stint.

Bought some AKG701's. Hated 'em. Too bright. Bought an amp, a near stock PPX3. They got better but I still could not listen to them for more than 30 minutes. I just bought the HD650 and now I feel like I'm straining to hear what is going on.

At the LA and OC audio society meetup thing, I listened to an HD600 powered by the Millet Hybrid. I'm wondering if that might be a better cup of tea. I like coloration, but damn if I can't listen to my music anymore.

My HD580 (pretty much same as HD600) is quite balanced. Im not straining to hear anything, every sound is just there. According to most, HD600 is indeed less colored than HD650, latter known for its very euphonic color. Perhaps HD580/600 is indeed your cup of tea.

Yeah that's what I am thinking. I'm going to pack that bad boy up and ship her back today.

Sounds to me like you already secretly know that you need Stax, maybe a nice SR-Lambda. ;D
