Well if you're wearing a hat i'm guessing you're being casual. So if it's casual, act casual, your look shouldn't really matter imo, most dudes don't really care unless this is for something professional but then again if you're wearing a hat that's not a good idea. If your looks do matter to you, get looser fitting hats or try a different cut, shorter hair always means less maintenance.
