Has the Lavry DA10 fallen out of favor?
Jul 23, 2006 at 10:18 PM Post #2 of 67
I think Dan Lavry needs to be interviewed by someone writing for positive-feedback and then everything would be right in the world. People would know that it was the best thing since his Lavry Gold and Blue. That it is better than anything else less than the 8k that the Gold cost.

I don't even think Dan would say those things though. Unlike.....

Fickleness rules..... , there and everywhere. Maybe he should have put more blinking lights on the front.

I find myself more and more enjoy the DA10 after switching the stock powercable and fuse. Sometimes this kind of cables could cost you more than the DAC, but not mine, at least not now. Enjoy, you guys~

best!

A few days ago I noticed that you had changed the fuse in your Lavry and attempted to locate one on the internet but could not. I must have been looking in the wrong place. Can you point me in the right direction?

What power cable are you using?

Wow...now that's some high praise if I read you correctly. Are you saying that you feel the Lavry DA10 is better than any dac up to the 8K range or maybe just a better "value" up to 8K? Not trying to put words in your mouth...just trying to understand your post. This dac really interests me but it seems to have fallen out of favor of late and I have to wonder why?

NO! NO! my first paragraph was obviously a poor attempt at being facetious at what I see some reviewers do with interviews that I have read. Note that I even said that I did not think that Dan Lavry himself would say what I said in that paragraph about the Lavry DA10. But it is suppose to be the equal to a two channel Blue, no not the 8K Gold.

I see. My bad. Guess it's just another example of how a builders time in the headfi limelight is so fleeting and brief. Still seems a good value despite the perception(mine) that's it's fallen from favor a bit.

The following link provides some of what Dan Lavry says about this industry/hobby. Some very interesting observations and some that are in the face of some which would tend to result in a dissing of his LavryBlack / DA10 design around here.

http://www.lavryengineering.com/lavr...topic.php?t=70

So you see my take on what he says is if he had added some dead weight, a larger box and a few extra lights on the front then his design may have been more accepted. This are my interpetation of his words and not Mr. Lavry's. So if there is any misunderstanding it is mine.

Can you cut and paste those comments? The link/site requires registration. I'd be very interested in his comments. If you don't want to post them, I'd be tickled with either an email or PM.

Dear slwiser,

The fuse now in the DA10 is made by Furutech in Japan. I brought it at a shop in China just few days ago. I believe you there is no information in English on the internet, since I did search this too. The fuse with rhodium plated cost me 360RMB(40+USD). The other one at the shop with gold plated only needs 200RMB(25USD). I find the DA10 should have more midrange quantity and better bass refining after I compare it with some other sources. The edge of the fuse is a rich midrange. It brings a littlte more midrange quantity to the voice and more present sounding, but not very much. The fuse has nothing to do with the bass, at least I don't see it so far.

I used to use Oyaide Tunami GPX power cable which I have sold already.

This cable brings everything out in DA10. lively, detail, fast, bumping bass with lot more quantity, and more. I call it cable of Viagra. however The first problem with this cable on DA10 is it makes the sound too aggressive and too bright in the upper high, I am not enjoyable for long-playing. The second problem is I need a much softer cable which I can easily curve to fix my table.

I now use my friend's ZU Mother PC. Not brings the same degree of improvement as the Tunami GPX does, but still has much more overall details than the stock cable, more refined and accurate overall sounding. The soundstage is more real and present comes with deeper and detailed bass (solve the bass problem very well), the high goes much higher without any harshness, and the mid sounds more clear and sweet. The overall performance is so much more High Fidelity than the stock power cable. I will return the ZU Mother to my freind very quickly. I am still confused with which one to go next, but one thing I can say for sure is the power core is so much important to the DA10. I would probably buy myself a ZU Mother if I find nice price on audiogon

Here are two pictures of the fuse and the package,

This DAC has to be the best buy DAC lower than 1000USD.

I sold my Lavry DA10 only to finance more goodies. I really like the Zhaolu, but it is not quite as nice as the Lavry. The Lavry is my reference point, and I'm trying to see how close I can get the Zhaolu to it and stay under 1/2 the cost of the Lavry. I'll find out soon. But the Lavry is still the unit to beat under $1000.00 IMO.

I have had some "let me down" experience with DA10 on some speaker systems. But this don't stop me still loving it when I put it back to MY headphone system~

I agree completely.

Thanks for the detailed information. I am sure that part of this will become standard for every Lavry around here.

I spent some time with some DACs belong to this price range including DAC1 and MINIDAC (with stock cable and fuse, everything is stock). None of them gives me as much satisfaction as the DA10 does. It sounds just quite right. Not saying that I am 100% satisfied with it. No gear is perfect, no matter how expensive it is. If I did, I must tell lie.
