It all depends on what compression is used to create all the music that they have. Most will (usually) stick with using whatever the program defaults to (and I know many of my friends who do that) however I also know a fair few people who prefer to keep all their music organised their own way and have it all saved as MP3 files. If they do this then any other media player can be used without any problems at all of course.

I guess what I'm saying is that Apple has created a very attractive media package between the iPod, iTunes and iTMS. Add to that the DRMed files that some people have, and I think it means that you'd have to have something absolutely head and shoulders above the iPod as a player to justify giving up the other elements in themselves and also the package as a whole.
