Superimpressed by this dac!

It’s nearly perfect as a hardware plattform for those of us experimenting with inserting different upsampling algorithms into a dac.
Very well done Gustard :beerchug:

You should try the X18. It is a full step up in sound quality across the board compared to the X16.
I’ll gladly check it out, but I’m very impressed with the x16 😉

How can the implementation of AES be so good but USB so bad??? If possible use AES (or I2S).

This is a keeper. It sounds absolutely fantastic with “NOS ON” and upsampling at 384 kHz thru I2S :L3000:!

That USB-implementation tho… What???

Playing from a battery powered device connected by USB (I’m playing ”Code Cool” in hi-res lossless from Apple Music with my iPhone) the sound is AT LEAST on par with I2S. The music is much, much smoother with less sibilance and glare. Excellent :L3000: !

Guessing that it’s RF-noise that ruins the sound when playing music from the computer connected by USB - totally unlistenable.

Just in case anyone reads this thread wondering if the X16 is a good purchase I say “absolutely!”. It’s really good at any price - and incredibly good for it’s price. It checks all my boxes (time-domain performance, timbre, tonality etc) :L3000:

This is one of the better DAC’s I’ve had in my system. Apart from Gustard I’ve also had DAC’s from:

- Chord
- Merason
- MSB

Pretty great company 😉!

PS. The Gustard is not as good as the most expensive but setup “right” (my preferences) it’s remarkably close.

Cross-posting from the Topping HS02 thread:

The Topping HS02 sits between my Apple iMac and Gustard X16. It really has improved the performance with USB:

- less sibilance and glare
- improved separation
- better focus

Recommended :L3000:

So I’ve ordered the X18. Looking forward to comparing it to the X16.
