Though it went in tangential but along the tangential, I am awaiting ASR measurements on A26. For that to happen, they need a sample first. Would be really interesting and helpful if anyone in US, willing to be A26 reviewed/measured by ASR, send them the device after mutual agreement.
I think lot of measurements vs subjective grudges may go away if one understands the difference between "High Fidelity/HiFi" and "Sounding good/Sounding great". Both are not the same!
But that is exactly the point (unfortunately).
The best measuring DACs are often quite cheap... It seems the Topping line (300$ - 800$) excel in this pure measurement area.
Some say they are actually specifically made for that : to perform well on the SINAD bench.
But many people listening to them do not like the way they sound.
Strange enough, the reverse is also true : the best sounding devices do not always perform well on the measuring bench...
On measurement websites, like ASR, they tend to say :
- nowadays, all DACS are equivalent... and beyond that we enter a domain that the ear cannot hear anyway...
- a DAC is now a staple, a commodity. Take anything... providing it is cheap.
- anyone paying more than 500$ for a DAC is a fool...
I do not know what they measure exactly... is it at the entry of the analog stage (just the decoding part), or at end of the analog stage (the sound)...
But I think intuitively that there is something wrong/incomplete with their approach.
I mean, I guess the DAC has the same function as the turntable cartidge. Transforming coded data into analog signal.
And turntable cartidges have huge price ranges.
I don't know...
But anyway, despite all this, I would also be interested in ASR measurements of A26, or a review by Goldensound...
Regarding ASR, If I had to place a bet, I think they will conclude that A26 is equivalent to :
- Topping E70 Velvet (400€) - same chipset
- SMSL D400EX (900€) - same chipset.
Note that regarding Topping, the A26 chipset (2x AK4499EX + 1 AK4191) is only to be found in the "E Series" : Topping D70 Velvet.
But does not reach the "top level" Topping line, the "D-Series", like the Topping D90SE/LE, which have a ESS (Sabre) chipset.
(If I am not mistaken Matrix DACs also use Sabre chipsets).
But then again, many people say Topping sounds flat and crap.
So... I reallllllly don't know... what is the best value for money. And I am a bit lost, tbh.
I think I will just set this project on hold... I am still happy with my PS-Audio Digital Link III Mod Cullen IV (more than ten years old).
