Best live recordings I have ever heard:

1. Ozzy Osbourne - Live and Loud
2. Black Sabbath - Reunion
3. Dream Theater - Live at Budokan

Simply OUTSTANDING performances

I don't like any of the commercial live releases, they sound so artificially clean.

Here's some of my favorites:

Smashing Pumpkins: June 28, 1997 at the Roskilde Festival, Denmark
The Dave Matthews Band: October 6, 1994 at Lee's Place, Toronto
Ani Difranco: March 21, 1998 in Osaka, Japan
Nirvana: Cabaret Metro 1991?(can't recall the date)
Garbage: Loreley festival 1998

All great bands and these particular shows are fabulous in terms of performances.

Frampton Comes Alive (can't believe it hasn't been mentioned???)

Cheap Trick - Live at Budokan is one of my all time favourite live albums, back when they still had a real edge to them.

Must be something about Japan, Deep Purple Live in Japan is another classic and Dream Theatre Live at Budokan is also great.

Japan is a great crowd to record concerts because they are not annoying and don't scream during the quiet parts of songs. Very well behaved crowds, but go NUTS when they should. I love watching DVD's recorded there, because they are so different than the U.S. In the Ozzy "Live at Budokan" DVD, there were middle aged businessmen that went from work to the concert. They just stood there and watched the show. Ozzy tried his best to get them going, but that was a loosing battle

I can't believe it took 20 posts before this came up. Definitely one of my desert island discs.

I own this album - it rocks!

But sentimentally, the one live album my whole crowd had a copy of in our teens was "Depeche Mode 101" - man, that thing, plus New Order's Substance, was just the 1-2 Double CD punch of new wave doom.
