Call up Grado Labs and explain your problem. I'm sure they'll be able to fix it (Grado has great service, they even still repair their HP-1000 series heaphones (the original ones from the mid-80's, which many people also consider to be their best).

i was looking at these on Todd's site, and they looked pretty good... how do they compare to the grado's (sr-60's or 80's) and is it worth upgrading from senn hd500's?

alright, alright, quit laughing about the 500's already!

Re the Beyer 231's: they are excellent phones, but if it's Gradoesque up-front-and-rockin' you're looking for, then the 231's aren't really it. They are surprisingly refined (especially considering the price), with amazingly clean treble and good bass, but the midrange is a little recessed, giving them a pretty mellow and 'few rows back' presentation. Still might be worth checking out though. They're all plastic, but solidly built and comfy.

Seriously though, I only heard higher grados but the closest headphone to them in the sub 100$ range is the KSC-35

Or, well, the new KSC-75 might be worth a shot too .. tell us your impressions then, they're only 20$ !
