Grado SR225e owner: SR325e vs PS500e vs RS2e - which way to upgrade?
Feb 20, 2016 at 8:51 PM Post #124 of 176
I think the Grado SR225e is a tad brighter compared to the SR325e. While the SR325e has a better lower frequency response or should I say deeper lows. But not significantly. Either way, the 325 is better than the 225 and if I have the budget, id get the 325. But if budget is constrained the 225 will just do fine.

I've had both the original 325i and 225i, and I found I kept reaching for 225i much more. 325i was crazy harsh. Haven't heard the e-series yet, I would hope those kept 90% of the original sound signatures.

For me, PS500 is the only Grado I have kept.

Would the original 325i be the gold one? I think they say that was the most harsh Grado ever.

I suppose we should consider trying to add GH-1 to the 225e>upgrade possibilities, but they get rarer.

I had a silver 325i -- I lasted about a week with it.

The PS 500 is the only dark Grado that I have heard--and I have heard almost all that have been put out in the last 6 years and a few earlier ones.

I think that makes it the 325is then. Shame it was so bright. Some find it that way but some love it. Also there appears to be the case that not all are equal. Meaning some 325's may have more bass than others.

Personally I think I would only an 'e' version of the 325. I very nearly did a few times recently. However they are out of stock on Amazon and Richer Sounds have them at full £300. Whereas they mostly selling for £270 for a good long time.

Anyway I have the Chord Mojo and good desktop speakers now, so no rush for me to upgrade anymore. Previously I was feeling an urgency to upgrade when I was only using the 225e by my desk.

I used to own a GS1Ki and RS1i. Both gone, they were good, but I got tired of them. Only the 500 stayed put. It's an outlier among the Grados I've heard. In a good way.

On my side I got rid of the RS2e (too bright) and the GH1 (overkill) and I'm back with the 225e. (with the tape mod.)

The 225e are really the sweet spot.

I haven't heard any e series yet, other than 80e, which I did not like -- I still think the 80i was a great sleeper HP for its price, along with 60i. If there's only one that tickles my curiosity, it would be the 500e, given that I really enjoy my 500.

I have also owned the PS500e but I prefer the 225e with the tape mod.
