Grado RS1e matters (and impressions)

So happy to see this discussion. There are not that many Grado fans in Japan.

Recently, I bought a second-hand rs1e in "316xx", with black headband. I really like this one!

Two years ago occasionally I have heard the vintage rs1 from my friend in the U.S. and felt impressed. This time when I am using this early rs1e, I feel that it sounds a little like the vintage rs1! So much power in the middle frequency, and just like someone singing close to my ear.

The problem is that my amp for rs1i is not suitable for this rs1e, because it is so easy to push over. Even without an amp is better than using some powerful amp.

That's my experience.

The other day I suddenly felt my rs1e went deep and hits harder in the bass region. After another month, the upper mids/lower highs seem to be elevated by a few dbs so it doesn't sound so dark and muffled anymore. Instead the cans sounds airy and life-like now. Did anybody experience the same with their rs1es or is it just me adapting to their sound?

Probably a bit of everything....they do loosen a bit...but breaks are really good to appreciate the SQ

The "loosening" to me was not like other headphones. The changes on the rs1e were rather abruptly, that's why I was surprised both times.

I have listened back and forth between the rs1e and my ADX5000 (which is quite bright) for a few weeks when I noticed the rs1e changed in the upper mid/lower treble.

I've recently purchased an RS1e , well about 6 weeks ago to be precise. Now to put this in perspective I've been listening to the sr80e , sr325e & RS2e for the last few years so the overall sound of the RS1e was something very different to me , it was still a Grado yet a flavour I've never tasted before. I've listened to the RS1e everyday I've had them , easily 2 hours minimum daily playtime , covering a wide spectrum of genres.
Lately I've been noticing how wonderful they (RS1e) are sounding , so last night I thought I'd give my old faithful friend (RS2e) a phone call and see what he was up to , he showed up and we had a great time , anyway upon going back to the RS1e with just hearing the RS2e I noticed the trebles are present , the bass is magically deep , the cloud of darkness is no longer present .
I'm sure I have adjusted to the sound of the RS1e , but now I actually prefer the RS1e over the RS2e , this headphone is incredible.
Surely it can't all be me just adapting to the sound , because upon first hearing of the RS1e It didn't sound nowhere near as good as the RS2e , yet now it's better (subjective I know) .
Sure it could all be in my head , but there must be some break in involved , the RS1e is night & day difference from 6 weeks ago to the present minute.
If you are patient with the RS1e then you will have one heck of a headphone in your arsenal.

I love the ADX5000 - what do you prefer between it and the RS1e?

Yeah, they are quite different. I’ve considered to buy a pair of rs2e’s to complement them, but decided not. They are really one-of-a-kind. The more I listened to them, the more I understood on why John Grado took such a departure from the treble-heavy tradition.

Regarding the bass, using these G pads can make them pound, the stage also becomes juicier.

The ADX’s are more dynamic and overall more capable. But the rs1e’s are also very detailed. Aside from their lush yet rich mid-range, my favorite part is their sound stage. It’s surely smaller than that of the ADX’s, but this club-like stage oozes class.

Well, I joined the party late, but I'm here. I just picked up a store demo pair. I compared them to the G1000e, and I preferred these by a pretty wide margin. They didn't have them in stock, so I asked him to sell me the demo pair, and they obliged, at a discount too. I put the G pads on them and I'm now the life of the party.
