Grado RS-1 or Grado GS1000

Agreed - the HP-2 is the best Grado that I've ever heard, but I'll take it further and say possibly the best headphone I've heard. When listening the word "perfection" comes to mind.

My Grado rankings would match 003s:
  • HP-2
  • GS-1000
  • PS-1
  • RS-1

Jpak, How are the L3000s sounding?

I should have them tomorrow. Will post detailed impressions later on.

I did get a CD3000 yesterday, so far they're not in the same league as the HP-2 and K1000. A bit too artificial, can't get tone right.

I listened to some jazz last night and concur. Jazz & classical are perfect for GS-1000, but that doesn't mean that rock isn't good as well.

And once more, yes!

I'm not J-Pak but while we're talking about the L3000, I also got a chance to listen to that as well at the meet. Where it fit's in with the grados, I'm not entirely sure. I know for sure I liked the HP-1 better. The L3000 would probably fit in between the HP-1 and GS1000 or between the PS-1 and GS1000, depending on what kind of music is playing.

That would make the L3000 one of the best closed-cans ?

^ I think it IS considered one of the best closed cans.

I've read that, but also that the R10 is yet better (it better be, considering the price). I have never heard an R10 though.

I second this,
GS1000 and Jazz is just plain amazing, beautiful separation.
If you listen to your music more than 2hours a day, I pick GS1000 anyday compared to RS-1.

Why not start moving up the Grado chain instead of going from nothing right to the GS1000/RS1? There's much to learn before going right to the top!

I think the SR225's still sound the best though. Something about the 225's just treat me right, while the RS-1's are like pins and needles all over my ears. But I wouldn't know this if I bought the RS-1's as a first choice blindly.

Funny. It's completely vice versa to my ears. RS-1 has much smoother sound IMO.

I found the RS-1s smoother as well...

Funny, out of the GS1000, PS1 and HP1, the only one I found uncomfortable was the GS1000. The HP-1 and PS-1 are heavy, yes. But they both have soft leather headbands that can be even more improved with beyer headband covers or simply replacement headbands.

The GS-1000, on the other hand, made my ears feel scratchy and overall not good... not sure why. I guess it all has to do with the shape and size of your head.

GS1000 wasn't uncomfortable but it doesn't sit well on my head. No matter how I try to position it, there's a small gap between the bagel and back of my jaw. So it doesn't sit tight around my ears. The headband should make more pressure I think.

In the stock form PS-1 is the most uncomfortable (well SR325i even more so, but it's not worth mentioning in this thread) because it weighs the most. Though this is easy to fix with Beyerdynamic headband cover as you said.
