Drew, in your opinion, is the PS500's sound signature more close to the PS-1s or PS1000s?  Are they darker sounding headphones like the PS-1 or piercing sounding like the PS1000s?

Oh boy that is a tough one. Until I have them in house to compare I'm not ready to answer. I certainly dont find the PS1000 Piercing Sounding though. Or where you dramatizing? What amp are you using to characterise this?

IMO, looks great. Though I do prefer the shiny finish.

If the PS500 are the same as the HF2 (looks likely?) then count me out. I didn't care for those headphones much, and thought the HF1 sounded better. However, the PS1000 was my favorite Grado, by far. And it sounded great out of my Decco's headphone tap.

Drew, any chance you could comment on this? Are we looking at more of a PS series sound or more of a HF/Prestige type sound?

EDIT: Found my own answer:

PS500 seems to offer a similar acoustic signature to the legendary Grado HF1 and HF2 models with which the PS500 shares a certain cosmetic similarity, along with something of the soundstage depth and timbral expansiveness of their uber PS1000 design.  Stay tuned for our full HeadRoom 'no holds barred' reviews and PS500 comparison shoot-outs asap!

About what I expected. I guess I'll have to check em out when my LHS gets them.

I dont have the HF1 or HF2, so no comments there. I do have the PS-1 & PS-1000. So as soon as these roll in the door and I get an my packing done for RMAF CanJam, hopefully I will have time to sit back and compare.

With all the talk of these possibly being re-badged HF-2s, and even better - a tweaked version - I can only hold my breath. I loved the HF-2s and trying to find a MINT pair is getting harder and harder. I'll be ordering these very soon!

If the RS-1 to Drew is more like a studio monitor and the PS500 more organic in comparison, than it really does sound like the HF-2.  I mean the HF-2 were really organic to me and the HF-2 were called the baby PS1000, so it makes sense that the PS500 maybe a tweaked HF-2.

Yea, I have to agree not the best review. I think what he should have said was they are a very Natural sounding phone. Not the most Neutral sounding. The HP-1000, I would agree is super neutral. These are no PS-1, which I own and will never sell, but they are very fairly priced for what they do. They are indeed a very nice phone. The RS-1 is very much like a studio monitor, very detailed, up close and personal. The PS500 are more organic sounding than the RS-1. granted I only got about 45 minutes with them at Grado powered by an iPod and my IQube V1. So I have not nearly had enough time with them to give a perfect thought pattern on them yet. But I do like the end results of what a wood insert with an metal cup do for a phone.
