Got the sansa clip recently and...

I picked up a 8GB clip lastnight at walmart and I love it. I think the sound quality is very good, on the warm side, which is what I like. I actually changed the EQ but liked the stock setting the best. Very happy with the purchase. Also, the radio gets excellent reception, even better than my Denon home theater receiver, which is puzzling.

i own a 4 gig clip and a sony a728. the first week i got the clip, i tried to eq it a bit to match my sound preference, which was the a728 at the time. i just couldn't match the sound and was a bit disappointed on my purchase. but now i listen to the clip with flat eq and i can honestly say its definitely the superior. i match my clip with my hd650 and my pfe's amped. i love the sound so much i'm really considering a sansa fuse for the capacity upgrade. i still really like my a728 and it's my main player i use to listen to in my car, but at home it's the clip and my hd650.

What kind of files are you all playing on your Clip?

FLAC sounds damn good straight out of mine. I've thought about adding an amp, but have no real reason to do so. It'd be a shame to have to take away the tiny form factor.

I use Vorbis q6 files on all my portables.

I've had the little guy since about 2 months after release and it looks the same as when I bought it. It's mainly just for heavy activity use now (gym, biking, and snowboarding), and what I love most about it is the silly little clip it comes with.

I don't think I will ever have a serious sound session with my clip, I mean all i do is connect it to media monkey and hit the random option for syncing till its full and go.

The question about shuffle vs clip...

I had a shuffle 1g (the 512mb). Compared it with the clip.

Very similar in my opinion in terms of sound.

Both are great gym players. The clip kills the shuffle on features. Don't like Windows Media Player as much as itunes.

Do like the idea that the clip plays wma.

But my shuffle was getting a bit old; and 8x the storage has a benefit.

Put the shuffle up on ebay and its gone gone gone.

Well from what I read the first gen shuffle was said to have surprisingly excellent quaity.

My brother bought a Sansa Clip and wasn't too thrilled about it. I don't like the control that much. Atleast it has an LCD. I prefer the Sansa E series with Rockbox, with a silicon case it can absorb and takes drop abuses pretty well so I could use it while being active.

Was given this shuffle that had a bad headphone jeck, so I killed it:

Did you try accessing the DAC settings and upping the bass gain from -4.5 to 0? With flat settings, the Sony sounds quite adequate. Still, I agree with you. The Clip simply sounds better. Not night and day, but...better.

I'm not very knowledgeable in audio terminology, but I'll try. To my ears, the Clip has much better soundstage and much better treble detail than the 2G Shuffle. The Shuffle also seems to suffer from some strange peakiness somewhere in the midrange that is very fatiguing; I wish I could go into detail about the frequencies, but I don't have that capacity.

It also sounds muddy to me, and the bass doesn't seem to extend as low as the Clip; mostly midbass warmth. Of course, this could be because of a bass roll-off issue that Shigzeo mentioned in his post.

And don't get me started on the hiss. The Clip in comparison has almost no noise, but it is still somewhat audible with highly sensitive phones.

I noticed the same thing. You can tame that with the EQ.
