Since joining this forum, I've purchased a set of Shure E500's and Grado SR-80's, along with a Xenos X1HA-EPC portable amp. I'm thinking about picking up a third pair of headphones to 'round out' my collection, and am looking for something with a noticeably different sound signature than what I have. Budget is pretty tight at the moment -- about $200 max, preferably in the $125 - $150 range -- but if there's something for $200 - $300 that is highly recommended I'll just wait a little while longer (I already have two great pairs of headphones, so I'm not actually clamoring for one).

Maybe the AKG 601? ($210 at Headroom right now). Or the AKG 271 s, or the Beyerdynamic DT 250? I don't know, I'm still pretty new to all this (but thoroughly enjoying myself so far!

I too own E500s and Grado SR-80s (along with UM1s and PX100s). I am thinking about getting some closed headphones. I'm looking at the Senn HD580s. I would be using the headphones with my RSA Tomahawk.

How do the HD580s and 770s compare?

Like many, I find the SR-80s bright and fatiguing.

the Sennheiser hd600's are expensive, but way different from the Grados. They are more laid back, less edgy on top, less upfront, fuller with a more tubey sound. They need a decent amp to bring out their best.

What about the Sennheiser HD555's?

Just to let you know, the Sennheiser HD580 is NOT a closed pair of headphones.

Good point; I should also clarify what I'm looking for. I have a pair of IEMs and a pair of (very!) open headphones, so I'd like to try a pair of closed headphones....but this is most definitely NOT a requirement!

If you're going to spend $210 on K601s, you might as well spend $35 more or so on K701s. If you're going to stretch it to $300, get HD650s or HD600s.

Thanks for the recommendations!

I think I'm going to save some money and go with something in the $100-$150 range. The holidays are coming up and I don't want to have to skimp on presents because I was selfish and spent $300 on another pair of headphones. The HD555's @ $100 are very tempting...what are your thoughts on that?

Believe me, I'd love to be able to try these! But my budget won't allow it at the moment....after the holidays will be a different story.

So I'm heavily leaning towards the Sennheiser HD555's, as they are very reasonably priced ($100) and I think they will be a good complement to my existing headphones.

What do you guys think? Go or no-go...and why?

You have amateurs. You have dynamics.

You sir need some Stax.
