Stupid Q: Do incoming calls (and conversations born thereof) deduct from my allotted minutes?

Yes, using calling card is a cheap way to make internatinal calls. And be careful when you use calling cards, I have heard stories like people stuck with $1200 cellphone bill because they pushed the wrong button to end the call when using the calling card then dialed another number and that one was charged by the cellphone service company.

Depends on the plan. If your plan specifies "Free Incoming" then it will not be deducted, but the default for most plans is that incoming deducts from your pool. For example, Sprints plan have Fair and Flex and Free Incoming. Usually you get less minutes for Free Incoming, but if you run a business or something and get many calls its worth it.

So if it doesnt say free incoming you can safely assume there is no free incoming.

As for the deposit, generally If you pay your bills on time then you will have no problem getting it back. Sometimes they are flexible. I had to make a 150 dollar deposit, but since I never missed a payment, I called them after only six months and requested the money back. What they did was just put it as credit towards my next bill.

Seeing that it is 500 you're paying, you might want to start calling them and try to collect some of it back after a couple of months.

What plan did you choose? besides your credit and history, it may be because you applied for more than one line, eg:150 per line, or if you ordered a very high plan 79.99+ a month, then they would require a larger deposit.

Ive never had to ring anyone up for lol 500 USD deposite before. Besides being the last person to own a cell, are you not the last one to start using a credit card?

You might want to jump on the credit card wagon soon, as right now its nothing much, but later on it will help you in the long run for things like mortgages and the such. I have no need for a cc, but I do know I will eventually need a long and good credit history if I ever want to purchase a home.

I chose the 450 w/ rollover plan, which is the cheapest one. Added teh $5 text plan, and may add insurance soon. I have a debit card, my parents alway taught me to never buy anything unless you have the money on hand. (with exceptions) So I never borrowed, cuz I didn't need to. I do realize I will need to start building credit if I want to own a house or new car or anything.

Thanks for the info, I'll go check if my plan has free incoming.

EDIT: Don't know now, can't find anything on incoming calls

As far as I know, Cingular does not offer free incoming minutes.
