An audio-technica ATH-W10VTG that is. Dunno how long I'm going to hold onto it though.

So some prelim research results in the following:

ATH-W10VTG, released May 21, 1996 for Y39,900.
ATH-W10LTD, released December 1, 1997 for Y52,500.
ATH-W11JPN, released December 1, 1998 for Y68,250.
ATH-W100, released December 1, 1999 for Y44,100.
ATH-W11R, released December 1, 2000 for Y58,800.
ATH-W2002, released October 21, 2001 for Y105,000.

and currently in production:

ATH-W1000, released November 21, 2002 - street price is generally around Y38,000.
ATH-L3000, released November 21, 2003 - street price is generally around Y185,000. (This is a part of the "W" series...)

So is the ATH-W10VTG the first woody?

Best,

-Jason

Heh, I spent a good ten minutes thinking of the appropriate title...

"So I sprung (for) a woody..."

I dug up the info I wanted with the search button...

http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7410

And I know I'm not the only head-fi'er with these...

I'll post more images later - but from their website:

Pretty nifty. A piece of history that actually sounds pretty good.

Best,

-Jason

nice.
I used to want all of them... but now I've decided that I'll just go with the ones that (I think) really sound good, which I guess is the L3000, and the W2002 to a lesser extent. I still have 50% of their lineup though.

here's a nice page you might like.

the L3000 isn't in there, but since it is part of the L3000 special contents page, it is assumed people know that the L3000 is part of the line?

Alex, I just love that page. Someone else posted that same link recently, and it really is impressive what they've done with their woodies. I thought you would keep up the good fight and try to collect them all.

I've heard the W100, W1000, W2002 and L3000. The 100 and 1000 are both quite nice, but nothing 'special' in terms of sonics. The W2002 are considerably better than either, IMO. The L3000 are yet another step up, and approaching reference level as far as I'm concerned. Yet, is still has the AT house sound, and I've heard more detailed (Qualia 010), more involving (R10), more accurate (HP-2) dynamic headphones.

I'll be in Japan for a month and a half this summer (starting shortly in a few weeks) and I don't have much planned so you never know. I could very well end up scouring the audio shops looking for random stuff, old audio-technica wood series headphones included.

Wow. I've managed to get a can that neither Wayne nor Alex has!

I actually really like these straight out of the iPod. It's been a while since I've listened to quality cans. Now I just need to find some W2002's...

Best,

-Jason
