Currently, I'm using an old rock boxed (3rd?) Gen iPod Video with a Fiio E5 and Bose earphones.

The sound is good, but I think it can be better.

I'm planning to get a new MP3

Cowon S9/J3
Samsung YP P3/R1

A new amp

Fiio E7?

And perhaps a new pair of headphones.
I'd stick with my Denon AH D1001s, but I use them mainly for home use. It's too hard to keep on your damn neck. Can't even turn your head properly.

I like the sound I get on my computer (Macbook + Bose Companion II, I usually plug my Denons into my speakers).

Any possibility I can get the same audio quality on a portable set up?

I agree with chinesekiwi there, I think that would make the most difference in SQ

In the portable forum, there is quite a number of IEM comparison threads (and earbud.. and ear clip..), so you can choose your own poison

How much are you willing to spend in total though? IMO if you're willing to drop some cash you could get a much better portable than the iPod and some great IEMs as well.

What type of music do you listen to? To help us with the headphone selection
