I've been back and forth to a couple hundred threads and various phones on various sites and I can't quite lock this down.

I am looking for a good set of closed phones for a lot of travel in the next six months.

Phones will plug directly into a Cowon V5. I'm not going separate amp or DAC because it's simply too much of a pain to deal with multiple components, multiple recharges, and the rest on planes and while traveling generally.

I don't want in-ear. I do want good external noise blocking.

Quality matters and cost isn't an issue (say $300 to $800). So, people who have lived on planes, what do you recommend?

You might consider active noise cancellation on the headphones - it's not like you'll be missing that extra detail over the plane noise anyway. IIRC Audio Technica makes noise cancelling headphones? I know Sennheiser does.

Price range would be useful. Otherwise Senn HD25-1.

But would Cowon drive them without an amp? My Sansa Fuze sure as hell doesn't

Added $300 to $800 price range.

Considered the Senn HD25-1 but saw some people complaining about extreme tightness and discomfort...

It's hard to avoid if you want good isolation.

If you can spend some more, try the Edition 8 from Ultrasone

Otherwise you might want to give those noise cancelling headphones a try.
