Well, it's obvious that everyone will just say "GRADO" for rock,

so .... any other cans good for rocks?

I have to say that I find the Stax 404 great with rock. I prefer them to the Grados I've heard so-far. They have a great immediacy and the speed is amazing. The bass thump thing to my ears is a non issue as the Stax and Grados can both rattle your ears when called for.

K1000. They're great for everything, but most of what I listen to is indeed rock.

I couldn't disagree with you more. My SOLE reason for selling them is that they were all but unlistenable for rock. Its not something definite (the bass is present, but not in spades), but more, just an off presentation.

The Senn HD650 and Beyer DT990 are my preferred rockin cans.

The K701 are too neutral for rock. I wouldn't say they have weak bass, but instead, a sound signature too polite for rock.

i heard that the dt880s were quick but i never expected them to be good at rock.

also if you arent coming from sennheisers everyrything in the K-X01 series does a good job. I love the drums on the 501s

What qualities exactly make Grados best "rock" phones?

And what kind of rock we are talking about, metal, industrial, progressive, punk?
Metallica, Tool, Pink Floyd, Rammstein, even Rob Zombie, all sound just amazing with 2005 DT880.
PF through them sounds just .... exquisite.
