Hi

Im in the market for a pair of headphones that can block out the sound of 2 babies a wife and a television. In college at the moment with exams constantly so need a bit of peace and quiet. Even with no exams id rather not have to listen to the wife.

Would be nice to get a cheap pair of Sonys or something. Dont care about sound quality in this case just blocking sound.

Your best option if noise isolation is the paramount concern would be an IEM. Also, what's your price range?

Cheap as ive other headphones and these wont be for sound quality. Just blocking. Quality is just a bonus.

Whats an IER ?

Would these cheap pair be decent at blocking sound?

IEM = In ear monitor. They're the little ones with silicon tips that plug into your ears, and they seal from noise better than any full-sized headphones. I use them for hearing protection when shooting, even. They are quite sensitive to fit, though, so some will be better for your specific ears than others. If you have fit issues, foam tips can often fix them, though.

So in ear is definitely better at full size for blocking sound yeah? Wouldnt have assumed that but i never looked into it really.

Yes, a good IEM will isolate better than most full-size headphones, and ANC will not help you with blocking out screaming/yelling/talking (it does better at blocking more sedate noise, like air handling). That said, if you aren't trying to isolate yourself from a lot of noise, closed headphones may be sufficient - it really depends on how much isolation you actually need (good IEMs can actually reduce situational awareness pretty substantially, while good closed headphones will just "dull" the majority of outside noise).

Exactly. They are my 1st choice when i want max isolation.
