DT770 gets my vote also. Also, I really liked what leather pads did for me. For $55 shipped, they are a great upgrade.

I have the Denon AH-D2000's, positively love them for my DnB/techno/electronica/etc and hiphop/R&B/rap/etc collections

my HD 580's can compete fairly well, they just don't have that low end oomph that the D2000's can really leverage to their advantage

never heard the DT 770's, can't comment much on them, except that they're cheaper by about 60% than the D2k's atm (amazon.com)

::EDIT
ok, so maybe not 60% off, they were at $127 for a while, now back up to $200, still cheaper than the $300-$350 for the D2k's

um, you won't really be driving DT 770's or DB's (since its more or less the same thing...) from an x5 with very positive results

you'll want an amp tbh

and if this is for mobile, ignore the Denon's, they'll fall to pieces if you beat on them

as far as $300-$500 extra, honestly, ~$800+ doesn't sound very good imho for them, but then again, thats just my take on it (the only 'phones I'd spend that heavily on would be GS 1k's or W5k's (or stats))

I purchased Denon D2000 because these headphones are usually recommended for metal music, but I do feel that sometimes there is too much bass in them for my liking. I am thinking of modding them to tighten them up in the bass department...

Well, Denon D2000's bass is strong and punchy but mid-range is somewhat recessed and when music recording has a lot of fast bass (bass-dense styles like thrash metal, death metal, etc.), the bass in Denon starts to fill your head a bit too much, it turns into a kind of standing droning sound, it's not pleasant. But when you listen to music recordings where the bass is few and between (more mid-paced, like hard rock or classic heavy metal), then the bass is quite pleasurable and there's nothing wrong with it.

Recessed mids is an unavoidable problem for any bassy headphones. I think the D2000 already is one of the best closed-back phones when it comes to the balance between bassy and clarity. So for his needs of rock, hip-hop and techno the D2000 should be good. The Ultrasone 650 is another good choice.

The DT770 certainly is several classes below the D2000, I'm struggling to think of what it is better than the D2000, except built quality. Its bass is heavy and boomy, and take away a lot from the mids. Is the amazon sale over? At that price the DT770 would be worth it, but I think they are a ripoff at their original price of $200+. If you are not planning to get an amp don't consider them, there's better options.

amazon has the DT770 for like $196 right now, up from $120

as far as using the D2k's portable, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, you'll break them, they aren't exceptionally durable

as far as thinking you can drive it raw from an ipod or whatever other crap DAP amp you've got, yeah it may be 25 ohms, it'll still sound pretty bad vs with a real amp, honestly I wouldn't consider any of these 'phones for portable usage, because of the weight and size, not to mention durability issues

I'd go with something like ECH's or IEM's

if this is for home use, why are you buying a portable amp?
