Been contemplating for a while on getting a new player for music, and iPod Classic would seem to fit the bill. How's the sound quality on it?

It's great. Ruler flat frequency response, good Sound to Noise ratio (see RMAA results in my sig). Be careful with the EQ presets on the original firmware though, they induce distortion unless you run mp3gain on your MP3s or aacgain on your AACs. Installing rockbox has many benefits, with a proper equalizer, freedom from iTunes, support for many different formats…

Go for it! Its great, also rockbox does make it better

If you want the capacity, just go for it, and put Rockbox on it. There are other players for the price, but none has so much storage (except the Cowon X7, which for me, is just too big). As a package, in my opinion, the Classic is an excelent player.

You can get a player with more storage for less. How about rockboxing an ipod video upgraded to a 240GB HDD?

The iPod Classic 7G is not on the official list to be a stable target for rockbox-ing, am I wrong in thinking that?

Oficially, it isn't stable. But there are currently pretty stable builds being developed for the Classic. I currently have it on mine and it's 100% stable. Only some minor bugs, but nothing major.

I've been told that the reason it's still considered "unusable" is because of the not-so-fool-proof installation process (no simple installer).

I would, though I didn't manage to get emCORE installed under Windows 7 (others did, so YMMV). I had to do it under linux (which is my main OS anyway, but I figured that it would be easier under Windows, I was wrong).

It's actually worth the hassle: no iTunes tie-in, 10 band EQ that doesn't distort audio like some of Apple's presets, no volume cap on EU models, support for many formats (including FLAC, if you're so inclined), replaygain, crossfading, crossfeed (not my thing, but some swear by it)… It's basically iPod+.

I also recommend installing the font pack and the "rayboradio_OB" theme, it's by far the slickest (IMO):

Yeah, feature wise there's no argument, Rockbox wins hands down.
Just that firmware DIY can be difficult for some, and can leave your device bricked if not done properly.
Maybe I'll try it out on my Nano once it starts giving up on battery.

Nope, only for the older iPod Video 5.5G.
