Get rid of the plasticky sound of the EMU0404

I went from outputting 16 bit padded to 32 bit in foobar, using an older version of ASIO, to Winamp, using the standard CD input, and the latest ASIO. I'm pretty sure there's a difference, though I'll check after I've finished my work

Install the latest ASIO for foobar.

Use 24 bit padded to 32 or just 32 bits.

Do you usually listen to CD or mp3 of flac? (all of the above?)

The shibach plugin only effects mp3s fyi. You say you are using CDs, the shibach would not effect it.

isn't kernal streaming preffered over asio?

It depends on your soundcard.

Kernel Streaming and ASIO accomplish the same thing, use ASIO if you have the choice, its a official standard, kernel streaming is not.

Its just at way of bypassing internal windows kmixer, and passing the signal straight to the hardware.

Sooo if I like foobar and don't use any EQ anything, I wouldn't notice anything going to winamp with this special plugin? Or by getting a newer codec for foobar?

Thanks,
an MP3/APE/FLAC/OGG/MPC/WAV listener (by the name of alex)

be careful with the equalizer in winamp. it's very buggy. many people claimed that their mp3s sounded different or strange, but the wavs sounded ok. the best thing is to not use the EQ. the difference between winamp and foobar with EQs may happen because the EQ in foobar adjusts other frequencies than winamp (14k and 20k instead of 16k with winamp).

*raises hand*

I'm with you pbirkett, I always though the EMU-0404 has a very nice sound, especially compared to my old AV-710. Most notably...the very smooth midrange. But hey, different strokes for different folks

Yes it's smooth and nice lows and highs and blah blah. But it doesn't have any texture on those sounds. A trumpet sounds like a plastic trumpet.

Having never heard a plastic trumpet, I cannot confirm or deny that, but have you heard a plastic trumpet?

To me, trumpets sound like trumpets, violins like violins, pianos like pianos, but hey, what do I know....
