I think a very valid point that needs to be raised is the quality of your recordings. Myself, I am using either FLAC encoded cd's or EAC using the alt-preset-standard setting. To clarify a bit too, my EMU-0404 is also modded.

Edit: Also, you do not have your gear listed in your profile, so which headphones and amp (if any) are you using?

0404-> rega ear -> hd580

And

i've never heard either the rega ear or the HD580, but from what i've read, the 0404 should have been a nice counterbalance to the presentation of that combo. in other words, if you picked a 1212 instead the overall presentation might have been a bit too boring and analytical. but to each their own!

I concur. the current card of my choice is modded 1212M which is definitely warmer than the unmodded version, and 1212M has a reputation for being more soft and refined compared to 0404 to begin with. yet i still think it had too much of highs with silver dragons. sounds just fine with headphile silver tho. associated amp is ppx-6pg7 with 3 RCA cleartops - yet another element of warmth + smoothed out highs.
