I'm looking for a gaming headphone and I heard the Audio-Technica ATH-A900 owns in this category. But I don't know if it still one of the best headphone for gaming out there. I also want to know how this headphone compare to the Sennheiser HD 650 in terms of SQ.

Thanks

Many posts here comparing the 2.

The Senn has an open soundstage and sounds better as you upgrade your source.

HD650 is way better than ATH-A900 for gaming, or at least fps, not too mention music. I tried ATH with same environemt as 650 before and even with my cMOY amp there was pretty big difference in 650 favor. x-fi card F.E.A.R. with sound sets on max

A900s are golden if you've never heard a 'higher' quality pair of headphones before

i heard the HD650's at a lancenter (glitch gaming) here in naples, up against my prolines, i really dont think they compete well at all.

even though ive moved to my K240's for music, i still feel my prolines are very dominant in gaming.

i have yet to hear the audio technicas, but i will in time im sure.

I'm sure w/ a proper amp the HD650 will be good for gaming. But your looking at a $600+ investment (cans + amp), the A900's or DT770Pro80's probably are better pure gaming cans for less then 1/3rd the price. I've used by HD595 for gaming w/ a good amp, and to be honest both my A500 and DT770Pro80's are better for gaming.

I really appreciate the comments. Is it a night and day difference between ATH-A900 and HD 650? I already have a Sennheiser HD 650 and it sounds great, I just want a gaming headphone to complement my 650. If the A900 sounds awful against my 650 I will probably look somewhere else.

Well its a different sound, the A900 will be brighter, not as detailed, have a smooth and light sound to them, also they are closed so thats a plus if you attend LAN parties, also they do not require an amp. If your looking to compare the A900 to your HD650 for music you might be disappointed. But the 3d positioning of the A900 is awesome for gaming. And they are in my opinion more comfortable then the Senn's 580/595/650 etc. Another option is the DT770Pro80's, though they have a slightly more boom to them then the A900's. If your a basshead then the DT770Pro80's are 4 u.

If you already have HD650, then there is no point even thinking of A900. Basically any high end can properly amped is superb gaming headphone. Hope that makes sense and yes, with Senns I could hear way better than with A900. Was way easier to tell where from someone was coming, sq etc. That directly translated to my kill/death ratio which was quite convincing, at least to me. heh

the a900 is great for music too. but if you are only in the headphones for games alone, i'd recommend saving some bucks and getting an a500 instead. save ~$100 and the performance will not be noticed at all for games. i hear it has more bass than the a900s too (but that may not be true).

don't get the hd650s for gaming... it's open (leaks sound in/out) and is indeed overkill for just gaming (and even if you listened to music, it would desperately be calling for an amp to sound even better)

the beyerdynamic dt770pro-80ohm is also considered a lot for gaming here, it won't need an amp for gaming either as long as you have a decent soundcard like an x-fi (even though an amp may help with quality for music)
