edwood you know that won't be hitting the states tho! it's a dream, ha they had the 4gb with the lifedrive and that wasn't even that hot it just got looked over for the most part hit and miss target there, then there's the universal, the 02, atom etc...interesting to see what the future holds tho, but as usual the proportions of these things get skewed and only parts of it may be true

I'd either pick up the GSM unlocked Treo 650 for $299 with T-Mobile (through J&R) or $179 (semi-locked) with Cingular or wait for the advent of the 700s, which will have WiFi and use the new Palm OS, from what I've read (ironically, I doubt we'll see the "Hollywood" model in the States). Everyone I've spoken to about the Windows Mobile version despises it.

Have you been to mytreo.net? A lot of decent information resides there. I've also read that Edge works quite well for data with T-Mobile -- does your current phone take advantage of that?

LOL, the extended battery for that thing would have to be as huge as that ginormous brick.

I'm guessing the MAGIC brick will have a battery life of about, Oh, 30 minutes?

With Sony Ericsson incorporating 4 and possibly 8 GB of NAND flash in their Walkman phones, MAGIC and HTC (UTStarcomm) will have some catching up to do. Well, that's if Sony Ericsson can incorporate a more fully feaured OS and QWERTY pad. Not that hideous two letter per key Blackberry thing.

Yeah, that one is much better.

Too bad the only CDMA Blackberry for Sprint sucks.

Good thing RIM worked out the settlement finally.

Nice image on the screen, BTW.

The T Mobile Sidekick does internet well.

EDIT: Nevermind, I should've read your post about how slow T Mobile is for you.

T-Mobile GPRS is dog-slow, barely 56K modem speeds. But T-Mobile EDGE is half-decent. I get anywhere between 140Kbps to 180Kbps here in Denver. I would not get a Sidekick, though. Overpriced, underfeatured, and it's web browsing depends on GPRS which means it's slow. I currently have a T-Mobile MDA (HTC Wizard) and it is quite nice and web browsing is decent on it. You can use either Pocket Internet Explorer, Opera, or NetFront for browsing (the latter two cost extra though). It is really isn't very big for what it does and I actually find it to be quite comfortable to hold for phone calls, and isn't too big to carry around. The slide-out keyboard is absolutely great. After having mine for a couple weeks or so I wouldn't be without it.

i think it's safe to say and i think everyone can agree that whatever you do...if you want internet browsing don't do it through GPRS (get another carrier if need be), it's a pain in the ass, boy do i remember those days, it's night and day once you get something like EDGE, EV-DO, Wi-Fi and or 3G etc oh yeah and i agree with the sidekick it ain't even worth it compared to what's out there now, in with the new out with the old

Treo 650 has major problems with the Phone locking up all the time.

My dad got an unlocked GSM Treo 650 and has the phone lock up nearly every day.

Reviews here are not so favorable.

That was enough for me to jump ship to a Pocket PC. And this is after being a Palm user since the original Palm Pilot.

I've read that only happens when you install lots of dodgy apps -- that if you stick with the proven, the hard reset issue disappears. Or so I'm told by a co-worker who was one of the editors on mytreo.net.

The one veteran corporate user with a harem of smartphones seemed not to have any such issues with the Treo -- perhaps because of conservative app implementation. Of the other complaints, the ones about sound seem pertinent -- not to mp3 playback, but for the person on the other end.

My friend, who adores his 650 in unmanly ways, shares your history but formed the opposite conclusion. It might be rather interesting to hear a discussion between the two of you. (He also claims that Sprint is "close to releasing" (in prisoner's stripes?) a locked non-GSM Treo 700p.)

Yeah, Pocket PC's get messed up very easily as Palm's do. But I checked out my father's Treo 650 and he didn't install anything else, and the phone still locked up. I'll have to check out if it's the SIM card issue or not.

That, and the Treo is very finicky about Bluetooth headsets.

LOL, "adores his 650 in unmanly ways?"

Just what does he do with his 650?
Yep, a CDMA Treo 700p based on Palm is just over the horizon. But is only an updated 650. EVDO and Megapixel camera is added. I'm guessing it will still have phone issues like the 700w and the 650.
