I prefer the K601 to the HD600. I can only assume going from the HD600 to the K701 would be a strong upgrade.

Heard both, owned the K701. Definitely preferred it to the HD600. Bigger soundstage, tighter bass, more detail, GORGEOUS midrange.

Only if you don't like the HD600 and are willing to take a risk on a much less musical headphone. The HD600 is most likely superior, unless you like to analyze music instead of listening to and enjoying it. Also, the K701 isn't even that accurate - it is missing the lower midrange.

So it is neither musical, nor accurate. If for some reason you want that, go ahead. Otherwise, stick with the very good headphone you have.

This is my opinion, of course. I have never heard the HD600 and I hate the HD595 due to its muffled sound (which it isn't for most people - it is probably due to its fit on my head and the shape of my ears). From what I have read, however, the HD600 sounds absolutely incredible and is very musical, while the K701, from what I have heard (over hundreds of hours), doesn't produce music, essentially.

Edit: I won't re-visit this thread, BTW. I don't want to see people's reactions.

IMHO, the HD600 and the K701 sound VERY alike. Unless you have a real reason to purchase the K701, I would recommend against it. I just came back from the Scotland meet and got a chance to compare my K701 against ~noober's HD600. They were very similar sounding. Overall, the K701 was more refined, but that was about it. The difference is minimal.

and ditto.
But overall, the 701 is ever slightly more superior to the 600.

ps: I bought the 600 after I had the 701 for some time, they are both very good phone.

I also find the 701 more comfortable, but that depends on your head.

I've been in a quandry about whether the 701s or the 650s should be my next headphone. Just picked up the 501s, and on my system....love the HD600s so much more!!! Detail with a soundstage. I keep waffling between them since I hear good things about the 701s, then I hear bad things about them. Since my system does well with Senns, I'm probably going to keep sticking with Senns!

Sounds a reasonable comment. I am suffering from 'upgradeitis' - I have Senn PX200 + Senn HD600 + Stax Lambda Nova + Shure E2C + Shure E5C + a drawer full of ear buds of various quality. At 65 years of age I should have more sense - but hell - you only live once.

The HD600/K701 are completely different animals to the HD650. The HD650 has a much thicker and richer sound deep down while the HD600 and the K701 have a slightly more balanced sound. The differences are already very well documented on Head-Fi.

FWIW, I went the other way, sold both the K701 and the HD650 after buying the HD600 a few months ago. I still really like the HD600, and I don't miss the others at all.

Well this is why I'm finding out that sometimes things get really cloudy on this site. I have read plenty of threads where people complain that the 650s just add bass. However, other threads I have read seem to indicate that the 650s add both bass and detail. I suspect when I do my next upgrade to my system (getting a dedicated DAC), I'll probably prefer the 650 over the 701 (since a lot of indications here are that the 701s are similar to the 600). I have noticed with Sennheisers in generally, that they really open up with uncolored equipment with high gain. I've heard some people say that the DAC I'm thinking about getting (the Zhaolu), can get kinda harsh with my Sony CD player. My hp amp is a high gain HR amp. I'm thinking it would be a good setup for either of the 600 or 650 (as pro reviews I've read say that the 650 has different drivers that give it more dynamics). Probably means the 650s just need a bit more juice then the 600s for getting that treble in.

As an owner of both (and many others), I notice that I always go back to the 600s for a reference point. IMHO, I have not yet heard a dynamic can that bests the 600 as an all around performer. The 701s are in the same league and frankly I would not be unhappy if they were my only dynamic cans. In the end, listening to both on your system(s) is the only way to form a useful preference. Their acoustic performance is really good so it is likely to come down to minor factors like fit, looks, comfort, subtle differences in presentation and frequency emphasis.

My 600s are several years old and have been rock solid. I've been through two 650s this year both with defects (one cosmetic, one bad driver) so I don't know if Senn is maintaining their quality standards like they used to. The 701s had no defects and seem very well built.
