Found a cure for my upgrade-itus

Hey everyone, just wanted to let everyone know, I just came back from Tower Records, and got Animal Collective "sung tongs," Madvillian "Madvillainy," John Coltrane "Blue Train," and Verdi's Requiem by Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. When I walked out, I noticed I had one of Rock, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Classical; I think from now on, whenver I get CD's, I am going to try and get at least one from these genres.

Everyone, thanks for the suggestions, but don't stop now, I've just only started, keep them coming!

Same here. I have bad MP3 copies of both Train of Thought and Scenes From a Memory. sfam is my favorite of the two, it is a masterpiece IMO, only CD I own where I love every single track and nothing in particular stands out. It is meant to be listened to as a whole IMO. ToT is DT's heaviest album and is really just crazy stuff. The drums in some parts, especially "Honor Thy Father" will blow you away, and the song "Stream of Consciousness" is DT's best song of all time imho. I've also heard a few songs from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and it sounds like a great album, but right now the most recommended album is Awake besides sfam, so I am actually going to buy that one for now and see how it is. Supposedly very good.

Overall, though, I agree, DT is my favorite listening material, and I would definitely check them out. They're all just amazing musicians.

Jean Grae - Attack of the attacking things (world's most slept on album. Jean's getting her fame now and everyone's saying she's dope, but i feel that her latest albums have been far below quality to "attack of the attacking things")

Woof! That's not a good one! Have you opened it yet?

The one you should have gotten was the EMI with Giulini conducting the Philharmonia with Scwarzkopf, Baker, Gedda and Ludwig. The conductor and soloists are just as important in classical music as the composer and work... sometimes more important. Robert Shaw is a great conductor of choruses, but the soloists on the Telarc disc and the Atlanta SO aren't even in the same universe as the EMI.

Anyone with an interest in rock needs Neil Young: On the Beach. The same can be said about A Tribe Called Quest: The Low End Theory with respect to hip hop.

For the guy who was asking about Coltrane, my favourite release is 'The Complete Live at the Village Vanguard'. It's a 4 disc set, sorry, but at least it seems reasonably priced.

It's nice to see that the indiscretions of my youth (Yes, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, etc.) are still popular. Based on the predominance of "kid music" in this thread, it doesn't appear that there are many people over 25 here.

I've been interested in music since high school, but it wasn't until I heard Cab Calloway's "Some of These Days" when I was in college when I realized that the world of music that I knew was just a tiny drop in the ocean. I had spent all of my efforts listening to everything I could find within the same narrow range of music... progressive rock and new wave. But since 90% of everything is crap, I found that my narrow focus meant that I was listening to more of the not-so-good than good.

Of course, if someone had told me that way back then, I would have just thought he was an old fart and gone back to listening to Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Dark Side of the Moon and More Songs About Buildings and Food... along with the crap... Tales From the Topographic Ocean, Breakfast in America and I Robot.

btw don't be fooled by thinking more music = less gear. if anything, you'll want the perfect rig for each of those 320 CDs...

but i did notice when i hit a plateau of satisfaction in my rig, that i would go out and get music to play on that rig. it goes hand in hand - it's not a cure, it's a catalyst...
