The mod should be fine. There should not be any sound difference as long as you have the ample skill to solder the new connector, etc. I'm just saying I wouldn't butcher my $1.5K headphones just to shorten the cable is all.

Fair enough... :frowning2:

Hey guys, I'm new here and very interested in the Fostex TH-900. What I have right now is a Sennheiser HD700 that I am using on an Ibasso DX100 DAP.. I live in holland and unfortunately there are no real stores or places where i can try out high-end headphones, the only high end headphone that I tried out on the ibasso DX100 is the HD800, which I did not like at all compared to my HD700's, maybe it just doesn't run as well on my equipment, but it just sounded very... boring to me, nothing really stood out. So I've been doing alot of reading on the Fostex TH-900, and from what I've been reading, this headphone has quite a bit of bass, which I love and which I found lacking on the HD800's. I've also been reading that the Fostex TH-900 is pretty easy to drive, which I thought was good aswell, seeing as for now I am using the portable DAP.
So yeah I am thinking of purchasing this headphone, although unfortunately I can not try it out before buying.

Would this be a huge upgrade over the HD700's?

Would I be able to get high quality sound out of the Fostex TH-900 running on the Ibasso DX100 DAP?

Thank you.

Welcome fonna

Your DX100 DAP will run the TH900s easily, as far as sounding good the TH900 sound good on just about anything including ipod's, however yes the more highend the better they will sound

Great headphone you will love them

I have both of the headphones and I used to have DX100 dap too. HD700 drive out of DX100 is actually quite enjoyble to my ears. DX100 has the best extension and smoothness up-top, even more so than the 901, which should pair well with TH900's incredible highs (unfortunately I sold my DX100 before purchasing TH900). TH900 has much more bass than HD700 and thinner, more laid-back mids.

SURPRISE....SURPRISE...

What is in this little ruggedized case ?

Our " precious " of course...

Everything fitted inside: My TH-900 Fostex, but also my Tube Amp TU-05, it's charger, cables, and the source RWAK100 (soon upgraded to a RWAK-120-S with dual DAC chip and a "real 2volts" line-out)

the case, PERFECT fit for the TH-900, is NOT a pelican case but made by :

Welcome.

I haven't got the HD700s, so can't give a direct answer. What I would say is that the Fostex TH-900 are a great headphone in their own right. I have the Grado PS1000, which, depending on who you believe, are either a world-class fantastic headphone, or utterly garbage. Regardless, the Fostex compares very favourably against it in terms of sound detail, comfort, build quality, you name it.

I think the question boils down to (1) will you like the Fostex sound sig (and/or are prepared to use a bit of EQ if it's not just perfect for you), (2) how much do you want an additional % gain in terms of sound. I don't know what that % gain is against the HD700, but unless cash is tight, I'd say you'll probably appreciate the difference is worth it ... especially if you would be willing to sell the HD700. The bottom line, at least to my mind, is that you're moving from a high end product to a flagship.

If you're not 100% sure, then provided you can get the TH-900s from a seller who is willing to take them back, they're totally worth auditioning.
