I just ordered my set of TH900’s!!! I can’t wait! I hope it pairs well with either the monolith portable or my uad Apollo mk 2.

It’s good to know that it pairs with anything but what’s odd to me is the TH909 Zeos videos where it’s super amp dependent. Aren’t these headphones similar?

They are, which is the mind-boggling part, lol

It reminds me of guitar gear. Testing all the boutique amps in the context of your signal chain is impossible in most cases.. so reviewers are your only source of information whether it’s Elmer Fud or a YouTube C-lister.

it’s a necessary evil, especially with covid. You’re forced to listen with a grain of salt

I prefer listening to live recordings.
Even on the studio recordings, timbre of the voice/instruments should be close to the live recordings.

My main criteria for judging headphones - when I listen to them, do they transport me in time and space to concert hall/studio where this music was recorded?
Too many headphones, even TOTL-priced ones, only create a very good reproduction, but never make me believe I'm present then and there.

I can't believe you are putting D8000 Pro and AB1266 in the same boat as TH900:

Neither of them has any bass boost or the 5Khz treble peak (especially Abyss :relaxed: ), both have more energy in the mids.
D8000Pro and AB1266 have a much flatter FR.

At least both of them have a flat bass, R10 drops like a rock below 100Hz, even the "bass-heavy" version:

The "bass-light" R10 is even worse:

TH900 is a very fun headphone, but it can't compete with truly TOTL headphones.
If it didn't look as good as it does, nobody would pay more than 300-500$ for it.

I'm not afraid to admit it - TH900's beauty was the deciding factor in my purchasing decision, not its sound.
We've all see that Youtube video - you know which one I'm talking about
That video is responsible for a big chunk of TH900's sales.

I've spent 500$-600$ on top of the 1700$ TH900MK2 cost me, trying to improve it's sound.
The TH610 pads did mitigate the recessed mids somewhat, but they couldn't make TH900 into what it's not designed to be - a natural-sounding headphone.
It has a great "wow" factor, but I can't listen to it over a long period of time.
Ok some heavy assumptions going on here ^^. I actually own the TH900SB and Abyss 1266 and have had nearly everything out there in the headphone market. These two are my keepers. IMO the TH900 is definitely one of the TOTL headphones. It provides very good technicalities with a fun tuning. The tuning part is personal preference, but the V-shape itself is very good applied. Nothing sounds "wrong" in the sense of odd or artificial. Just elevated. I know a lot of "neutral" headphones with some dips or peaks that sounds really unnatural or wonky. And I personally don't bought it because of the looks (maybe I am one of the few that doesn't like the looks that much). Regarding the Abyss 1266 comparison: The 1266 is very punchy and goes very deep and I therefore perceive it close to the TH900 in the lower departments, but still TH900 has more quantity but not as much as the charts may suggest. Also the takstar 82 pro was mentioned here, I had it as well. It is a very good entry level headphone with a similar tuning like the TH900. But technicalities are not on par, but also not 1500€ differen. If I would start my headphone journey again und would have all the knowledge that I have so far, I would probably take the Takstar and wouldn't go into the rabbit hole

I let it come at me flat as a beer left out for a week

That was good - I may use that myself in the future, if copyright use and royalty fees are not involved!

After a couple of weeks on Lawton pads, I'm back on stock pads. I liked the Lawton pads, they offer a little more space, but they also sacrifice a little sub-bass. Could probably be EQ'd but I'm a puritan. Guess I'll keep 'em as back-ups, but if someone in EU wants to buy them from me, drop me a line.

I just tried EQ’ing my 58x as someone suggested and it’s extremely round and bloated (as expected). I sure hope these are fast and punchy and not just a garbled mess when the double kick drum is going along with the bass.

Stock is the best sounding.
