So I really like the TH-900's when I heard them.  However, the TH-X00 is intriguing to me.  Do they really compare to the TH-900's?  I'm currently using the MrSpeakers Alpha Dogs.

Depends on how much of an "audiophiles" you are ? Me ? Once I hear the improvements , I need to upgrade, so under this term ? Th900 is on it own level

I'm a big one!  However, at $800 more it's a question of how good they are compared to the TH-900.  I'd hope the TH-900 is "better" but if the TH-X00 is 90% of the TH-900 I know which direction I'd go.

Well, it depends on your justification . To me, 900 is 900 and if you are hoping for X00 to be almost similar ? No ways. It could be preferences, but takes it this way, there gotta be "hear-able differences" for Fostex to be so confidence on pricing these two a part. Therefore, you can never have the X00 to perform the way 900 does

On a plus, you can transplant 900 drivers into X00, but it won't be cheap, and if you are doing that, you may as well buy "used 900"

Btw, the hinges and the pads are easily replaceable .

The best thing you do if you're concerned about the difference is to hear them both.
 
Once you're done doing that, decide which you want.
 
The difference is obvious if you have both side by side.
 
The sound signatures of both are different. As is refinement, detail, soundstage, clarity, all of it.

side by side, I did not find them similar, and preferred my 900s more. 
 
But, when I then listened to the X00s via a $2000 Audio-GD DAC, they sounded 
close to the 900s. Though I personally would never spend $2k for a $400 pair of phones.
the point being, it all depends on synergy with the DAC/amp you are using ..... always ....
