Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

Wait...you are saying MKII has new tune ?

It's possible. After all these years, Fostex may have done some change in the sound. Beyerdynamic T1 V2 and Sennheiser HD800S have slightly different tunings compared to their previous versions. We have no proof, not yet, but I have a feeling that Fostex sorted out the peaks in highs.

Majority of gadgets are with standard TRS connection. But the reduce cross talk on separate grounds is true

. Having removable cables just make it a better option for consumers.

Wow, thanks for the pictures. Did you get a listen to MKII ?

Haha, I wish.

This pic is from Fostex's Facebook page. Maybe a member who lives in Japan did?
talk of the mk2 being retuned is just speculation at the moment

Yes, it might very well sound the same. I hope they retuned it like Beyer did with T1 V2 though.

Been listening to the THX00 vs TH900 for the past few days. Based on early impressions I don't think TH900 fans have much to worry about, the TH900 is better across the board, most noticeable in the lows and highs. Listening to the THX00 just makes me appreciate the technical ability of the TH900 more. I feel the TH900 has a deeper stage and images better, but tends to harshness in the treble much quicker.

THX00 has an in-your-face sound, with more present mids which make it more enjoyable for rock, but I have to listen at a lower volume than I can on the TH900 because the bass has less control and a tendency to bloat, no doubt aided by the closer physical proximity of the drivers to the ears, as the pads are much shallower than on the TH900. I guess I'm spoiled by the quick, clean and hard-hitting impact of the TH900 so much that dynamic cans that exhibit softness and roundness in the bass sound a bit irritating.

I have no problems with lack of bass volume of the THX00, in many songs it actually sounds louder & more present, but doesn't take EQ boost very well since the distortion is noticeably higher than the TH900. Its definitely fun sounding so far, yet overall not as clear, refined or dynamic on complex acoustic or electronic music.

Nice impressions... I'm missing my returned TH900 so much.

I guess TH-X00 is not the headphone I'm looking for. I decided to wait for TH900 MK2 though.

TH900 MK2 is 1.5 tesla - definitely some changes in sound

Th900 is also 1.5 Tesla. I doubt the drivers has dramatically changes. You want to see MK III (mine modded)
1/ 3.5mm female jacks. Covered with Genuine Lambskin leather.
2/ solid silver cables all the way to the drivers :D
3/ Acoustic dampened cup chambers to tame down trebles spikes
4/ Solid silver cables into TRRS balanced for Sony ZX2

Now this is my MKIII

This is how it travels in stock pouch :D

Nice MK3 mate!

We'll never know unless someone gets their hands on a MK2 and do some measurements/listening tests. There's seriously noone on Head-Fi who attended that audio fest? Jude?..

By the way Fostex Japan has created a product page for TH900 MK2.

http://www.fostex.jp/products/th900mk2/

From that new page:

Magnetic flux density 1.5 tesla newly developed driver unit, bio Dina diaphragm, high-end sealed the lacquer Bordeaux finish of housing that strike a good beauty of the goods, the wire diameter was adopted optimized 7N (OFC) code every time you knock down stereo headphones, the corresponding reduction in detachable cable.

Newly developed, they say. So there's changes to the driver, perhaps? Keep in mind this is Google translation, I don't speak any Japanese.
