I have finally heard the Stax 009 at Stereo Singapore today. My jaw drop at the vocal, the clarity & soundstage.. as I spent 30mins listening very carefully at what the stax 009 is telling me, expressing itself brilliantly.. tears can be felt within... deep within.

Ok wrong thread.

Haven't heard the sr009 but I expect it to be better than the th900. My Blue Hawaii has been ordered and the sr009 will follow suit in due course.

For me the 009 is not better than the 900 - it is different - depends on the song - best "air sound" i heard comes from K1000

If I remember me right to my visit on Vienna Klangbilder12 - I hear Jecklin Float QA, Hifiman HE-6, Sennheiser HD800 and the Stax 009 with the own tube amp - and I had the K1000 as guest for test at home (but must give them back

).

HE-6 sounds better for me than Jecklin Float QA (both in the same rome, side by side).
The Stax combo sounds very great ... but for this price?

K1000 are airy indeed, my K501 have the nearest sound feeling to the K1000 - K/Q701 K702 are not so near.

But AKG wont make a revival of K1000 (?)

PS: At the moment I hear with my K501: Harry Quintet Allen Vol. 2-Night At Birdland

Preferentially I can understand this. But technically there is a wide chasm between the two (and the K1000s for that matter). I really love my TH-900s, but in the end they are still #4 in my collection. Not too far behind the LCD-3s and HD-800s, but quite a bit behind the SR-009s.

I hated everything Sennheiser too until I got the HD800. Even then it took a ZDSE for me to really enjoy it. Have you tried the HD800 yet? I also sold almost everything for a TH900, but to much regret (expectation bias mainly). That said, the TH900 mated with my ZDSE just as well as the HD800 ime.

Can't say i've heard the HD800 yet, do you know if the driver design of the HD800 is completely different to their previous lines? because i've been having technical issues with Sennheiser during my time with them(stress testing them under really heavy bass tracks)

Anyway closed back is really important to me, it's only fitting the highly regarded TH900 is closed back.

I'll have to agree that the Stax 009s sound better than the TH900s, but I'm still not wholly convinced on the HD800s. I'm currently waiting for a set to show up in the B&S section and might give it a shot. My experience thus far is that the HD800s really lack bass, which is a little disappointing when listening to some of classical pieces like the 1812. Haven't tried the LCD-3s but have heard good things about them - how do they compare with the TH900s?

Any one have any tips for caring for the eggshell ear pads?  I will e-mail Fostex to see if I can get a response but thought someone might have an answer on here.  I wouldn't think your traditional "leather" treatment would work on such a material?

But perhaps I'm wrong.

The hd800 didnt lack bass in my book, they just lacked reverb or decay from the bass. Worked good with classical but sucked for pop.

Decay is greatly done by the TH900s but it does overemphasize the lower-end.

If your amp doesn't have a tight grip on the drivers the bass seems over done. My Mjolnir even had some trouble but my Eximus's head amp was very boomy sounding. Granted I'm not a fan of the amp. I certainly wouldn't call it easy to amp...low impedance or not.

I am going to buy the 009 first, then I will think about the 900.
