Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

The Fostex TH600 is good news. I know more than a few people who have been wanting to get the TH900 but didn't want to pay the premium for the lacquer cups. This seems to be the answer for those people, assuming Fostex doesn't do something stupid and tune them to be way more colored than the TH900. If they retain the sound of the TH900 but end up costing half as much, I think they'd be a pretty good buy.

Given the loss of the Denon AH-D5000 / D7000 and their downright awful (IMHO) successor, the D7100, it's nice to see the TH600 potentially filling that void. Basically what the D7100 should have been with its claims of "flat tuning!"

That being said, I think the TH600 will have some competition:

....from the upcoming closed-back Audez'e headphones, assuming they're both priced around the $1k region.

Mission accomplished. Looks like the LCD-x have enough mass to attract orbit now.

For my scalp's sake, I'll take the SQ hit and opt for the Fostex or AT.

That's cunning timing on Fostex's part by announcing the TH600 right after the spectacular flop that Denon displayed.

True that, would have been better before Xmas, however. Still a good thing, and what people have been asking for (a cheaper and less blingy TH900). My guesstimate is 90% of the sound quality of the TH900 but at <60% of the price. That'll be a homerun.

Why do you assume it's going to be an "SQ hit?" The closed Audez'e look like they're based off of the LCD-2, which doesn't exactly smoke the TH900.

Sweet! good news! I'm always up fot the Batman look! And Fostex know what they are doing for sure, it's A no-brainer! Need a "on the goTH-900!", think that this would be it! =D

You said it was competition for the TH600. That's what I was referring to. But, you're still right: I don't know if the closed LCD-2 will be better than even that.

curious - the german magazine Audio (www.audio.de) rate LCD3 and the new Denon AH-D7100 with the same ratings and both a little bit over TH900 and HD800

SQ hit by choosing Denon over Audeze?

I had a pair of LCD2 over a year ago, sold it a month later and swore never to buy any orthos's again.
Dull, compressed and lifeless sound without any imaging whatsoever is all I heard. Didn't notice any SQ.

The D7000/LA7000 are one of the best headphones I ever heard and I strongly preferred them over any open phones or the Stax I had. I expect the Fostex to be another step up.
AT's are second in my book, beating the Denon's at times for some specific genres.

I have heard all of those and own one.  Totally backwards.  I don't like the 7100 at all.  I am not thrilled by Plantars but i liked the LCD-3 for one and would take it way over the 7100.  The TH900 and HD800 are in a different league imo, a step above the LCD-3 and three steps above the D7100.

Thanks, I'll know not to ever take them seriously again.

Sorry, another question from me. How is comfort between the Denon D2000 and TH900? If the pads are the same or quite similar, I might have to give up on the TH900. With the D2000, I feel quite a bit of pressure kind on the soft part of my neck that's behind my earlobe and from there up to the bottom of the back of my ear.
