For those of you who have or had the King, the Sony MDR-R10. If you don't mind my asking, how did you acquire them, and how much did you have to pay?

In normal life I understand this question would be quite rude, but in the spirit of this forum, I hope that it is not too out of bounds.

Most of them had gotten a used ones, form other members or auctions, audiogon sold the last two for 1250.00, etc...brand new, paying 4000.00 for it, I doubth, but I know there are some online places, even when most of the times they special order it for you, maybe here:

That's darn expensive! By the time I saved up enough to buy that, I'd probably be having a wife and kids, and so the money would be going towards taking care of my family! On top of that, the amount you mentioned is in U.S. dollars, right? Converting it to Canadian dollars would make it even more freaky!

No more new R10 you can find in the market. I think that is very hard even to find any used unit.

I bought on eof the last new exemplar by Hart Huschens (Audio Advancement). My cans is built in 1999 and s.n. is 1016.

It's still listed as a current product by Sony Japan. I haven't really paid a lot of attention lately, but last year when I visited Asia, I spotted it several times. It may be harder to find outside Asia.

I bought mine from an ad in the Gear for Sale area, for $1500. I think I've seen one appear there since, at a similar price. I've stopped actively tracking prices since I got mine. The two that Sovkiller mentions on Audiogon at $1250 were killer deals, unless there were serious issues with condition (I never saw those ads).

I bought mine from Tangel for 3600.00. I do love them, but if I had to do it again, I would have just gotten the Sony CD 3000 (Still might). The R 10s are challenging to pair with an amp. Within the next 5 yearsI would not be surprised if another company or even Sony came up with a headphone better than the MDR 10 for around 1000.00. Ther R 10 techology is from 1989. Surely we can do better in 2003 and beyond.
