God Shaped Box (2025) by Those Damn Crows - Local South Wales rock band that deserve to make it big, or as big as rock bands tend to get these days, their live performances are legendary. Great vocals on every track, Shane Greenhall never disappoints, the music's not bad either and the closest parallel I can make is a more powerful Shinedown. This is their fourth album and with the amount of airplay they are getting on Planet Rock, is likely to be their most successful yet. I went with the Quads this morning, they provide a nice bit of low down grunt that helps with the dynamics of this band's music. My favourite track so far is The Night Train which features some acoustic guitar that balances the two pronged electric guitar assault and makes for a very well rounded song ...... but damn, the next track is a real banger too

On deck in my queue are Mother Engine with their 2017 LP, Hangar. I've recd these fellas on here before, but they're one of the best progressive psych/stoner rock bands out there, IMO, so it's hardly surprising that they'd come up again. Unfortunately, the band took a hiatus shortly after they concluded the tour for this album and they haven't done anything aside from a few shows since. The original plan, from my understanding anyways, was to give two of the members time to record and release an album with another project(s) and then tour insupport of it with the idea that they would then continue on with ME. They've played a few shows since then and even tried out some new material at those shows, but it has been sporadic at best. Their mix of heavy psych, stoner, and jam band-style prog epics is so damn good I'm tempted to start a change.org petition or something. Obviously, I'm kidding as projects often just run their course for various reasons, but if you're a fan of psych/stoner rock, prog, jam bands or just good rock in general, you've got to give Mother Engine a listen. 🔥🤘😎

Loved the hangar recco.. Heard last night and again this afternoon.

For tonight, now, playing their previous, second album. On the Fan 2..

Currently sittinf atop my que are Бур with their 2022 double single, Kusturica / Digital, and their 2023 eponymous LP. Бур ('Bur' in Russian) are a proggy psych band hailing from Mother Russia's Saint Petersburg. I just discovered their music last night while muckin' around on Bandcamp and was impressed by the samples so I purchased the DLs to listen to the whole shebang. I'd like to add that according to some stuff I found on VKontakte (essentially the Russian version of Facebook), three of the members were arrested, imprisoned (since released), and fined for participating in protests against the invasion of Ukraine. I admire people thay stand up for righteous causes like that so I'm happy to support them. Getting back to the music, they've got tracks that range from instrumental jam band psych rock material, to prog laced epics, to meandering and delicate proggy folk, to 80s arena rock. All executed beautifully with immense talent on full display. If you're looking for something a little different to check out, this just might suit your needs, but even if you aren't, this album has too much good, eclectic, fun music to be skipped. 🤘😎

@JAnonymous5150, not bad at all. Listened to both those (a few times). I like the way Kusturica opens with the guitar. Nice

I took the k240 mkII foam pads off the DF and did some experimenting with the Dekoni foam tuning kit that I bought for another headphone. Trying to wring out some more detail and realism without sacrificing listenability. Settled on the second-densest foams, which is still a fair bit more porous than the k240 mkII discs.
The least dense foams had their charm; you could hear so much of room ambience and small details, and the actual... deepest reality of the recording. Realest I've heard. But we need some bass, some balance; that's also real. Also a reprieve from uber-treble. The second-densest foam keeps a fair bit of that hyper-detail, which will do.

On the AKG k240 DF.

Haven't heard the other two but have both Miles and Dave. That "Round Midnight" album by Miles Davis is really good through and through. That Brubeck is nice as well.

I checked out some samples of a few tracks and these guys sound promising. I added the album to my queue to be checked out in a bit. Thanks for the rec! 🙏😎

I'm stoked that you dug 'em. Definitely check out their other albums as they're all solid. Each one has a bit of a different take on their sound Hangar has a lot of longer prog epics and is a bit more delicate, Absturz is a bit more layered and aggressive with the sound, and Muttermaschine has a more radio friendly format and a bit of that raw, youthful exuberance that first albums often have. They're all great listens, though. 👍

I'm so happy that they clicked with someone else! They were such a random find and their track list goes through quite a few different styles so I figured they wouldn't fit with everyone, but I had a lot of fun listening to their stuff. I think it's cool that they can play that wide of a variety of styles credibly while also still sounding uniquely like themselves. That would be difficult to pull of for many bands, IMO. 😎

Topical Schtick:

This morning I'm rocking the Meze Liric IIs driven by my Schiit Magnius and Soekris 2541 being fed by a Wiim Pro. We're running behind schedule for arriving at out next city so I'm getting in the zone to start doing my warm-ups on the bus. If you think air drumming is fun, try it with sticks and practice pads while you jam to some decent music. 😂

Up first in this morning's queue are Parachute Day with their LP from February, Seasonal Expression. PD hail from Chicago and are another one of a growing number of bands putting out material in the progressive post-hardcore subgenre. I found them after a buddy I was discussing Stolas, another band of that style, with recommended their 2019 EP, Moral Support, to me. I thought that album showed a lot of potential and flashes of brilliance from a clearly very talented outfit. I caught their subsequent singles releases and was anticipating an LP, but somehow missed it's release until I was cleaning out my inbox a few days ago and saw the email from Bandcamp announcing it's release back in February. Needless to say, I quickly sought it out and gave it a spin. This LP is much more cohesive and well developed, representing a bug step forward for the band and I enjoyed that first listen quite a bit. If you're a post-hardcore fan, enjoy the progressive post-hardcore genre, or just like solid instrumental rock compositions, give this album some ear time. You just might dig it! 🤘😎
