OMNI (2025) by Karfagen - I made the most of Bandcamp Friday and got some new music and this one has been knocking my socks off for the last couple of hours. Karfagen is the vehicle of the very talented and ridiculously prolific Ukrainian keyboard wizard Antony Kalugin. He composes everything and then assembles a band to get it recorded and this time he's put together a doozy. He has a whole host of vocalists, with Marco Gluhmann (Sylvan) and Jean Pageau (Mystery) being fine examples, he also has Michel St-Pere (Mystery) as one of three guitarists and he has used them all to great effect and stitching all of the parts together is Antony Kalugin with his fine keyboard skills.
With so much going on this was an easy pick for the HD800S, they just give the music plenty of room to breathe.

Kickin' off my morning by spending some time with the DCA Expanse and they'll be plugged into my SMSL VMV P2 and Gustard R26. I snagged my longboard from the bus and went for a skate around the city I'm in this morning and I found a bakery that had these ridiculously delicious croissants stuffed with fresh strawberries and a little bit of super fluffly whipped cream. A fun morning exploratory skate, awesome pastries for breakfast, and good tunes on some great gear... It's shaping up to be a good day, my friends. I hope it is for you guys too! 🤞 😎

Up first in this morning's queue are Semantic Saturation with their 2018 release, Paradigms. SS are a cool prog-metal band based in Montreal (two amazing Montreal bands in two days) and they've got a great lineup and this album has some great guest appearances. I found out about this band several in between their first two releases while reading an article about Craig Blundell, the drummer for Frost* (separate story, but I was stoked when he rejoined a couple years ago) who has also worked with Steven Wilson, Pendragon, Kino, Steve Hackett, etc. For the sake of brevity and not being a spoiler I won't go into who all is on the album, but you've got musicians that have worked with Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, and more. Honestly, if you're at all into prog, prog-metal, or related and adjacent genres, this album is a must listen, IMO. Best tracks are The Stranger from Andromeda (Blundell does some really cool bass drum/pedal work here too) and Where Dreams Have Died which is the perfect closer. Enjoy! 🤘😎

Now I'm on the Audeze MM-500s, but I'm still using the SMSL VMV P2 and Gustard R26 as the signal chain. Later this month I'm heading home and I'm gonna rotate out some of my headphones so I'm trying to decide which ones to take home. You know your lineup is in a good place when you're having trouble deciding because every time you put a pair on that you think you'd eliminate, they sound sound so good that you end up back at square one. I feel blessed to have such problems.

On deck in my rotation are Ephilexia with their release from yesterday, Soul Eater. Hailing from Hungary, these guys are an istrumental post-rock band with a progressive twist that sees them incorporating sounds from math rock, post-metal, alternative, and multiple forms of prog. I'm only a couple tracks in, but this album has bit more low end groove to it than their past work that I'm familiar with. I'm definitely liking what I'm hearing. If they keep this up for the remainder of the album, I'll probably try to sneak a second listen in before I have to handle business.
