This morning I'm on my heavily modded Hifiman Audivinas driven by my modded Schiit Lyr (w/ Siemens Gold Pin ECC88s) and a Modi Multibit 2 fed by a Wiim Mini. Given the very doable nature of the mods I settled on and how good these headphones become after them, it's kind of a shame that Hifiman didn't do more with the Audivinas themselves. The silver lining is that their price has fallen to the point that you can acquire them for reasonable money, put in a little time and a few bucks for some mods, and end up with a pair of headphones that compete with much more expensive closed backs.

On deck in my queue this afternoon are Dredg with their 2009 LP, The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion. Dredg are a Bay Area band whose music lands somewhere near the intersection of prog and alternative. I haven't heard anyone else that sounds quite like them. I was exploring bands on the InsideOutMusic label that has a number of prog/prog-metal bands I'm a fan of in their stable a few years ago when I came across Dredg and realized I had never heard their work. I gave it a whirl and knew what I heard had potential, but that I was in the wrong mood for it. That initial experience has been emblematic of my relationship with this band and their music. It's great music, but I have to be in a specific mood for it to click with me. Thankfully, I just so happen to be in that mood and I'm really enjoying this album. If you're interested in hearing a bit of a different, proggier take on alternative or, conversely, a heavily alternative influenced taken on prog, then Dredg are definitely worth checkin' out. 🤘😎

dredg rules, they got progressively weirder each album. Catch Without Arms is a stunner of an album.

Been spinning the new Sleep Token - Even in Arcadia this AM on the DX180 / Maven II. Really great listen.

Qobuz (PC) --> Audirvana --> Schiit Bifrost 2/64 (NOS mode) --> Feliks Elise mkii (Sylvania 6SN7GT Tall Boy drive tubes, KT88 Genelax Gold Lion power tubes) --HD6xx.

Happy Friday, everyone. Working from home today. It is really warming here. The temperature flux has been really flabbergasting here. I am sure fellow Southern Californians would agree.

Anyway, starting the Friday with some easy music from Mr. Stitt. Wishing all of you a wonderful weekend ahead. Happy listening.

UM Mest Jet Black with my desktop Cayin HA-2A tube amp and R2R DAC Denafrips Ares 12th-1, overkill for IEMs but it sure sound awesome on so many IEMs. It can turn a more sharp or neutral set to sound warm and more organic. Listening to a new album from Erika de Casier, a soothing album that I'm sure I will revisit more.

beats/bass/violinist, really fun combo and album. Bass on the TX04 is so superb.

If you are into electronic ambient jazz, this album is incredible. The full-length album came out in 2011 so I can't believe it's taken me until now to discover them (I came across Colour Theory on Roon earlier this year), but better late than never. Such earful indulgence on the 6XX and Starlett.

Edit: Figured I may as well keep the Band Camp Friday train rolling...I just can't turn these guys off. TGIF!

Kerretta have become one of my favorite bands in the post-rock meets prog style since I came across them and posted an album or two of theirs a while back. The way they rely on a groove vased foundation and a rhythm section that plays from the pocket, but know when to reach beyond it is quite addicting for me as a drummer. Great rec! 👍

Topical Stuff:

Tonight I'm running my Hifiman HE6se V1s driven by my SMSL VMV P2 and Soekris 2541 fed by a Wiim Pro. I switched over to the Soekris for a bit because I wanted to try a few things with this chain specifically with the HE6se V1 and V2 and the HE1000se. The Soekris seems to lean into the strengths of those headphones in their excellent rendering of dynamics and space.

Up first in my wee hours listening queue are Eye of Autumn with their 2022 debut album, The Mountain. These guys are a prog-metal band hailing from North Dakota who mix a little post-hardcore riffage and post-metal layering and atmospherics into their musical blend. They've got a new album coming out on the 31st of this month and after pre-ordering it and checking out the single they've released off of the album, I wanted to hear more and figured now would be a good time to refamiliarize myself with their previous work. This album is somewhat raw and rough around the edges, bit it has a lot to like and shows the kinds of flashes of brilliance that make me excited to hear what they've done with their upcoming release after 3 years of growth and evolution. If you're a prog-metal fan or a fan of proggier post-metal takes then this album is definitely worth a spin. 🤘😎
