For 1st set of headphones, Grado SR-80's or Alessandro MS-1's?

I'd go for MS-1. I've compared them with modded senn pads back to back with SR-80 (with bowl pads) and liked them better. The MS-1 stock comfies also sound ok to me and are, as the name implies, very comfourtable too. SR-80 were a tad bit harsh sounding to my ears with bowls.

Go for the cheaper one.
(just like in your other thread)

this isn't answering your question exactly (and i hate it when people do this, so i apologize in advance), but i agree with gsferrari that the sr60 is better than the sr80. a better question might be, sr60 or ms1? i'd still take the sr60...why? because they are the best value headphones PERIOD. so much sound for so little dough.

Really?.. I might have to give the SR-60 a go to see for myself then (SR-60s are more expensive than MS-1 in Australia just to give you an idea of what the prices are like for Grados here). What sonic qualities make the SR-60 superior in your mind?

MS-1 without a doubt. If you take the SR-60 and give it a smoother treble and better/stronger low bass you get the MS-1.

SR-80 is too muddy on the lower-bass and mids...louder but blotched

SR-125 is too tinny on the highs and actually is the worst of the lot because it doesnt so bass very well either

SR-60 is a very good balance between every spectrum with a mite of graininess to the treble but not up to Sony CD-3000 and Senn HD-595 levels of grain.

SR-225 is a perfected SR-60 with smoothness and more air with less reverb

SR-325 is the best budget Grado

MS-2 is the king of the budget Grado/Alessandro models because it improves on the SR-325 while retaining some of the SR-225 pluses that were missing in the SR-325

sr60 is more expensive than the MS-1 where you live? no brainer then - get the MS-1.

Gsferrari, among all of the above headphones,

Which one give you the best bass extension?

Btw, did you compare the SR-60 with comfy pad and SR-80 with bowl pad?

Best bass - MS2!!

SR-225 is a close second with a noticeable bass hump

SR-325 is pretty close but the bass is shrouded by the highs.

Its either an SR-225, 325 or MS2 if you are looking at the high end. Of these 3, the MS2 is my favorite. The 225 didnt do anything to me.

I had the SR-60 and the SR-225 and I ended up keeping the SR-60

Go figure...the improvements are there but the jump from SR-60 to SR-225 is not as large as the jump from SR-225 to MS2
