The beauty of a computer is its easy to switch though

I'm having trouble deciding too. I'd really prefer to use 88.2 (much faster resampling, less CPU load because it's a multiple of 44.1 KHz) but keep going back to 96KHz... something about it seems to sound better. 88.2 KHz sounds just as organic (on my card and to my ears anyway), but somehow loses something... it's very subtle. Something like a slightly decreased sense of overall definition at 88.2, and my ability to hear it varies depending on what music is being played. I freely admit to the possibility that I may be imagining it.

Same with me, I keep going back to 96 as it seems to have a certain something that I cant quite put my finger on, and yet I too would admit I could be imagining it. But both imagining the same thing? Maybe we really can hear it

you guys should try 192kHz if only you could

It says here,

"Professional features ASIO 2.0 in 16/48 and 24/96"

It can't run "untouched" in 16/44.1 so how about trying 24/96?

When I try 24/96, it says "unsupported sample rate". Thanks for the help, though.

try latest kX drivers, they should offer better ASIO support than creative..

I have the latest kx drivers, which say full asio support, but it's still not working. I don't understand. Do I have to change any settings from the driver control panels? Thanks for everyone's help. I decided to use wave out instead, since that works with 24/96.

Hmm.. my Sonica works fine with 24-bit padded to 32, but I'm using waveOut, is this why? Doesn't work in KS, only 24-bit does. Something I noticed though, whenever using KS I get a pop when seeking and stopping/starting a track. However, the pop is much quieter when using 16-bit output compared to 24-bit. I emailed M-Audio about this, but they never responded, oh well.

I can't decide on upsampling either.. on some music I really enjoy how the 96kHz upsample sounds, but on some tracks it seems like its masking some detail by being overly soft.

Hmm, ASIO in Foobar is very touchy for me also. 24 bit padded to 32bit (with or without 96khz resampling) seems to work - as in, Foobar doesn't say "unsupported output data format," but no sound comes out.

BTW, I'm using an Audiophile 24/96 and a DI/O and Foobar 0.7.4.

Anyone have any ideas?

(edit: Also, I'm getting strange occasional clicks - even with DirectSound. Very odd. This didn't happen with my old setup [reinstalled motherboard + new CPU]. Hmm...)

Yep. kernel streaming and ASIO are more picky because they have to match the output capabilities of the card/driver.

Check your mixer. Maybe it's not routing correctly.

As for clicking, is your DMA buffers too small?

OK, I'll check the mixer. I don't see why anything should change when using ASIO, though...

Re: DMA - it's set to 512. What's the suggested buffer size? I have 1GB of RAM, so...

you cannot access digital outs using ASIO, at least I never could on many cards, Kernel Streaming works fine for this purpose..

digital out and ASIO should work. That's how I use external DAC.

In the patchbay/router I have H/W Out SPDIF set to waveout s/pdif. In foobar I select Maudio Delta ASIO. Make sure you're not muted also.

oh finaly I found it - I must route it to 7/8 ASIO out, then it goes to digital output
smily_headphones1.gif
my card has 6 analog outs, so after them there is digital

Thanks guys. I'll try that when I get home.

I also found out the cause for the occasional clicks - it's the DI/O itself (losing sync briefly), not my computer or Foobar. Crappy damn thing. Time to upgrade.

Are you sure it's not some powerline related issue causing pop/clicks?

I notice when my heater or fridge or some lights turn on and off, my system would pop. I'm redoing my AC power stuff so hopefully I'll fix that soon as it's annoying.
