Would someone please explain what Fubar 2000 is and what purpose does it serve. I see it pop up quite frequently on posts.

It's a free digital media player for Windows, Apple OS, Android etc.
The benefit of Foobar 2000 over other free media players is that is supports many free plugins.
The bad thing about Foobar is that there is a learning curve to using the UI and installing/using plugins.

Foobar2000 so many options that there is a learning curve. On the surface it’s easy, it’s free, you download it and after opening it plays your files.
Though maybe because it’s free there can be some research into finding out all Foobar2000 can do.
One of the most useful is the WASPI plug in. This allows the bypass of the windows audio architecture, if I understand things right? For many it’s a big improvement in sound.
Next is the ability to play multiple file types. These abilities come from searching out the plug-ins and loading them. The great advantage is the fast and simple way of transcoding files to play on other players. Let’s say you have a hi-res 24bit FLAC but want to play it in your IPhone or iPod? Normally people will attempt to get a program for their phone, but with Transcoding you can simply add the converted file to your regular ITunes library and play the files along with your regular library. Apple ITunes also uses a hi-res codec which allows hi-res to be played back. The only bottle-neck would be the iPhone or iPod DAC chip which will top out at 48/16.
Apple hi-res is ALAC with 24 Bit audio at 48Khz, will play on Apple devices but due to the DAC being 48kHz / 16bit that’s what you’ll hear.....though it can be a noticeable improvement though.

While there is a huge benefit to using WASAPI output, being that the sound quality increase drastically by bypassing windows audio (as you already mentioned), it has the negative aspect of completely locking out all other software from using the sound device while music is playing through Foobar.
In some cases, it will introduce instability to other programs trying to use the sound device... but it's easily remedied by closing Foobar.

I think for many the program ends of being a file processing tool. The really easy thing to do is called quick convert. You have a muti-channel DTS file but want to play it in 2 channel on an iPod or Walkman the task takes seconds to start up.
1) Highlight you songs on the screen then right click and choose quick convert.
2) At this point you’ll be asked for a file location. Typically before the start of the process a named and created file exists in documents for a location the finished product to stay.
3) After starting the transcoding a screen will show progress and a quality statement will be produced at the end. If a transcoding error occurred you will get a notification.

Ah forgot about that conversion thing.
It's such a long time since I've used it, but as you say, it's really awsome and one of the best things about Foobar.
Which reminds me - 'batch' editing metadata is another VERY powerful feature that I like in Foobar.
So many other programs force you to edit one file at a time. Foobar you can edit as many as you like at once.

I'm listening to SACD rips on foobar2000 Windows right now. I love this player.
There is a version for Android but I don't believe it is really the same player.
