I had preferences similar to yours (maybe differing in the cash part, which could make a difference) and I just purchased the ATH M-50 based on a lot of research and recommendations. I haven't listened to them yet so I can't vouch for them.
I was strongly considering the Denon D2000, but I decided they might be too fragile and would cost me too much after getting an amp. I've heard the ATH M-50 runs pretty well without an amp, but of course will benefit nicely from one.
It's a closed headphone by the way, supposedly pretty neutral as it is a studio headphone, and you can get it for just under $100 on ebay.
