First expensive dac

Buying to test and return kills the industry. If you want to try them, find a local dealer and go and demo the items, or find somewhere that loans the items out if you pay a deposit :)
Would love to. . Unfortunately high end equipment is very hard to demo in Ohio. Almost non existent. Your idea is very genuine, unfortunately not realistic for many.

Check out https://www.thecableco.com/, they do online rentals of headphones and gear, you pay a 5% deposit that gets you a couple weeks with whatever, and then the money you spent goes into store credit for when you decide to buy something.

I know the frustration of having nowhere within an hour or several to demo stuff, fellow midwesterner!

Excellent suggestion. This is the best route to go if you can't get any meaningful demos around where you live.

Since DACs are so damned subjective (and also system dependent). You have those who live and die by R2R DACs, some who only use NOS R2R DACs more specifically and others who love R2R but hate NOS, while I live and die by Chord DACs now.
