Don't spend your money on the expensive silver Cardas solder - all you need is a nice eutectic 63/37 blend with a rosin core. Kester is a brand that has served me quite well, and a lot of people will recommend them as well. I personally like to use smaller guage solder since I do a lot of SMD soldering, so it's easier to control the amount of solder, but it's generally a little bit more expensive. Through-hole and connectors will be easier to do with thicker solder guages, since you can apply more of it at once, but this is mostly up to personal preference.
 
Also, don't forget to pick up a set or two of Helping Hands if you're doing PCB work. It makes things much easier and they only cost like $3-5 if you get them from somewhere like Harbor Freight or your neighborhood discount store.
