Not in the sound but...

L E A K A G E !!!

Damn, I think these things are louder from the back than from the earcups! Even listening at a low to moderate volume, it sounds like a pair of speakers are playing in the room. This is very annoying when listening after my wife has gone to bed, or just plain annoying when you don't want to disturb others with your music.

Solutions? Put a blanket over my head?

Nope, that would make the K501 closed

Hey, remember when I posted that the AKG leaked more than Grados and that one insane Team AKG member told me that his AKG didn't leak at all? LOL!!!

Whatever happen to being honest?

Are there any closed AKG models that you could try Beagle?

KR: I would assume with the design, I am stuck with the leakage.
If you examine the 501, the rear leakage is understandable, since the drivers are closer to the rear screen than they are to your ears! The pads are nearly an inch deep.

It's so strange to pull the phones off your ears and they suddenly are louder LOL! They would have to make a bigger air chamber and add some absorbing material.

Too bad because as I said, I don't want to disturb anybody and I don't want people listening to my music, it's none of their business.

For some reason, I'm not sure about the appeal of a closed AKG phone. Anybody heard any?

Beagle,

The only currently available fully-closed AKG headphone priced higher than the budget-level K55 is the K270S, which sounds like crap - especially for such a high price ($200+!

) that most places sell the K270S for. All of the good-sounding AKGs are at least semi-open in their cup design.

The "leakage" as you call it is NOT A FLAW, but a design objective of the 401/501. What do you think gives them the spacious soundfield & imaging?
That's what they're suposed to do! If your application can't tolerate the "leakage" get some Ety's!!

Yup, and I have an idea that with you sleeping with the phones the room acoustics are less than optimal LOL

Better soundproof your listening room to prevent reflections
