Can a DAC improve the sound coming from speakers for a computer. They are not expensive ones. But sometime when I am working on the computer I enjoy listening to music without a headphone. What DAC would you recommend.

If you don't have good monitors (speakers) you would be wasting your money on an external DAC.  If you do have revealing monitors the SMSL M8 is a great sounding DAC.  It will even playback DSD and has adjustable filters.  It also uses the ESS9018.

Can you recommend good speakers.

What is your price range?

If you want to go all out you can get the Bowers & Wilkins 800 series diamonds for $34,000 however you would then need to spend another $20,000 for a pre amp and a pair of amps.

Forget that that is way out of my price range for computer speakers. I was looking at a price around $300

Audioengine A5+ Active 2-Way Speakers $399 from amazon.  or the Audioengine HD3 $399 has a built in USB DAC.

@kgs51 why not use the X7 as DAC? it has a good line out.

@FiiO , on 3.1.8, all names are correct! no more Chinese characters where they don't belong. thanks!

Is it worth it getting the X7 at the current discounted pricing compared to say the X5iii?  Is the firmware working well.  Has SQ improved?  Am looking at getting a new Dap, and SQ/streaming is most important.  I like that I can get different amps for the X7, and would probably use the balanced amp most.  How does the SQ compare to current offerings (X5iii, DX200...)?

What about the HD3

Ken

It has a 24bit 48khz USB DAC.  It also has Bluetooth that you can connect your X7.  These are small speakers 2.75" woofers.
