That foobar trick worked for me!
Does anyone know how to do the same for Rocket Player?
I can only get the first SD slot working.

I tried to get various players from the Play Store working with the two SD cards and failed. I think part of the problem is that these apps are made with phones in mind which only have one card slot.

In the end I gave up on Rocket player and used Hibymusic app. It sounds great, sees both my SD cards, allows folder browsing, and has a UI that isn't weird (I'm looking at you Neutron). Perfect for my needs.

RE the discussion about the X5iii sound sig being on the warm/smooth/musical side (which I agree with):

I use Effect Audio cables (all balanced connectors) and had been using the Ares II+, which is a great-looking (for what it's worth!) and sounding copper cable.

But it was almost too warm (I won't say mushy, and it has great lower mids, bass and depth, but definitely not as crisp as I would like), what with copper being warmer-sounding.

Just switched back to a silver / copper mix with the same IEMs (Earsonics Velvet) and it sounds fantastic. Has opened up the upper mids and treble a little so the music sounds more open.

And it definitely highlights one of the X5iii's strengths, which a lot of people have commented on, which is that the instrument separation is very good and instruments sound exactly as intended. And to quote @LCMusicLover, live albums put you on stage with the band rather than in the middle of the venue.

This applies whether using the X5iii solo or with a line out to the ALO CDM (I.e. Using the FiiO's DAC and the CDM amp section).

For reference, I'm listening to Bonnie Raitt's album, "Dig in Deep"; an old greatest hits album by a band called D*A*D (which is full of tracks that were recorded before the recent 'loudness war' started ruining some modern albums); Blackberry Smoke's "Like An Arrow": and The Band of Heathens "Double Down Live in Denver Vol 1".

I'm finding that, from a guitar-focused music point of view, the X5iii sounds best with albums that breathe properly in the original mix. Anything very heavy with a very scooped-mid mix can sound a little congested.

Just FYI for anyone who likes guitar-based stuff.

Great rundown! Kudos.

Just for people who don't want to get rid of Google Services Framework, but want to attempt upgrading it instead with the latest beta version to see if it helps anything:

Go here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.google.android.gms

Click agree to be a beta tester

Wait for around 30 minutes for it to sync up

Then go on the play store here from your Fiio or a browser: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.gms&hl=fr

It'll let you update your Google Services framework to the latest beta. If you ever want to roll back, you can just leave the beta test or uninstall from the same link. This will let you install and run youtube as well. ;)

I'm still testing root and what I can achieve with it. RK3188 tweaks and governor fixes. If I find anything else interesting, I'll post it here. :)

My X5iii is rooted (with your help) as well and looking forward to it. I love my X5iii very much, but I the usage of the battery can be better for sure.

Ok, loving my X5iii so far, the sound is fantastic with my modest Shure SE425.However, I would like to make some suggestions to the software if I may:

1) Better battery management, deep sleep if possible when not in use, this includes turning off services that the device is not using and the blue light of the turn on button.

2) I was on the official FW, however, I decided to try the Windows X free ROM just for one reason: going into the folders took too long on the official FW, with the Windows X ROM the access is almost instantaneous. In both cases I tested with cards formatted with my X3ii.

3) Something is going on with the scanning of the songs, without making any changes to my music, every time that I scan my songs I got a different number.

Again, awesome DAP, some work on the FW and it would be one of the greatest IMO.

I invite you to take a read on what we posted in WindowsX's modded rom thread pertaining to battery life... :/

Seriously, thanks for the post.  Always nice to eliminate bloatware.  First thing I do with any new computer, but didn't know what I could remove here.

So you have Greenify installed as well?  How's the battery improvement on that?  I wanna root mine too, simply for the need of longer play time.  Thanks!

Yes, I have Greenify, I "greenified" some processes with good battery improvement. If you want battery life, do not install Custom Roms, stay on the official FW, root it and use Greenify.

Ok, I finally received FiiO X5 3. My first Android DAP :)

Impressed with initial impression. On the black noiseless background, and deep bass. With Oriolus 2, the sound is even deep and darker. I think this DAP suits cold/brighter more analytical IEM. Synergy on warm monitors is dark, I quite like it, but can see why many may not. Perfect for bass and electronic playlist.

Purchased for less than 400 USD, this is a good deal.
