FiiO X5 1st gen: final firmware update version 2.6 now available--improved scroll wheel and playback reliability
Nov 27, 2015 at 11:00 AM Post #16 of 41

I posted on the Fiio forum and though they did not answer my question directly ,what they did say leads me to believe that any limit is due to the max size of the micro sd card available.  Not due to limitations on the part of the X5.  So, SanDisk has a 200gb card available now.  I'm going to take one for the team and spend the $100 to test it out. Fiio said the new card is not available in China yet so they have not been able to test it.

I just ordered one yesterday. I'm rather worried now after seeing this thread

Unbelievably disappointed in the X5. First and last FiiO product for me.

The sound quality is great but just about everything else falls short.

If you're reading this thread and you're debating whether to get a FiiO product or not... don't bother.

I will have to disagree. I find both my X5 1st gen and X1 to be excellent players and I'm very happy with both of them. What my next player will be it's not decided but for me Fiio will be in the runnings and I'd love to get my hands on the X7.

I have 2x Sandisk 200 gb cards running just fine in my X5 1st generation for some time now. No issues to report.

I'll have to agree, on the other hand. It's a thing with Chinese brands, wait, not saying that's a bad thing, but consumers new to these cheap alternatives (as I was back at the time) need to be aware of what they're likely to encounter, and that thing are flaws which may or may not be individually fundamental.
Fiio might have improved their presentation over the years, but each time I visit their website or read posts from their representatives I can't shake off the feeling that it was all written by doge. Example? Here you go: http://www.fiio.net/en/products/5
It's not as awful Chinese >> Google Translate >> English, but to me, it's of things to come.

On to the products themselves, had these in chronological order, here's what I think:
E06 - The good: Sound quality; The bad: The clip sucks and the buttons are flimsy.
X5 - The good: Sound quality (*), two SD cards; The bad: Shrieking amplifier, awful irrelevant and unneeded scrolling wheel, OS full of bugs, line-out too loud to be amplified directly.
E12A - The good: Sound quality (*), bass boost; The bad: Volume not input-independent, channel imbalance, mismatching shell parts.
L16 - The good: Sound quality; The bad: Nothing, actually, good job.
RC-SE1 - The good: Sound quality; The bad: Microphonic, short, painful on the ear.

You see what I'm getting at here, like a lot of other people suckered into this by popularity? The sound quality for the most part, is just as advertised. Everything else however, falls short. Am I spoiled, oh no doubt, but if I knew what I'm getting into I might as well bought a Sony or an A&K and be done with it.

It's all about money, Sony et al have the cash to invest in software and have experience with hardware. Fiio on the other hand have very average software but good hardware. The move to the X7 will help as they don't have to write all the firmware and OS, just an audio player app that any decent (non-embedded) Android dev can write. But it's still too late for the few that bought too soon prior to the X7, once bitten etc. I had the same with my Colorfly C3.

HELLO JOE BLOGGS AND FIIO DEVELOPERS! I have carefully tested new X5 FW2.6 firmware and found some bugs and interface inaccuracy. I’ve been waiting for fixing them more than a year, posted this bugs on fiio forum but they are still there in FW2.6 firmware.

1. When I play folder with cue sheet and file without album information embedded it doesn’t show the album title from cue sheet on display. It shows “Unknown album”. If I play folder with cue sheet and file with album information embedded it shows the album title from file instead of the cue sheet. Cue sheets are made correctly and work on any other players and Foobar on PC correctly. Please make the correct displaying of album information from Cue sheets.

2. When I play folder with cue sheet it shows on display track title with extension .WAVE:

“Track01.WAVE”, “Track02.WAVE”, “Track03.WAVE”… even if the music file is in Flac or Ape format. It always shows extension “.WAVE”. The same is when I browse in folder or scroll by the ring in track list. Please remove this extension and just display track title like for any other files.

3. When I scroll by the ring in track list it always shows file name with extension even if I set it in menu to use Title (File name display > Title).

4. Please change the name of the option in menu “File name display” to “Track name display”. In English it is correct translation.

5. When I Delete the whole folder it asks to press OK and then displays “File deleted”. In English the correct translation is “Folder deleted”

6. When I browse in folder, select track and choose in shortcuts menu to delete, it’s displayed on top “Delete whole folder”. In English the correct translation is “Delete file”. I press OK and it shows “File deletion failed”

7. When I scroll by the ring in track list, the text is shifted a little bit to top. Please move it 4 pixels lower so it is centered on screen. If the list is less than 7 tracks it is also shifted to top, not at the center of the display. Please move down so it is centered on screen.

8. When I browse in folder the file selection is highlighted with orange lines. On bottom of display these orange lines are shifted 2 pixels lower than grey grid lines. The same is when I browse in playlists or by category.

9. When I play large files (size is 2.5 Gb, 176.4 kHz / 24 bit) in format wav it doesn’t play and says “File format not supported”.

10. When I play by folder, and “Play through folder” option is on, I set play mode to “Repeat” but it doesn’t repeat the folder. Instead it changes to next folder. Please correct “Repeat” mode.

11. When I update library it shows total number of songs for example 910 songs. But when I check in System settings > About X5 > it displays “Total no. of songs: 900songs”

12. In Menu > System settings > About X5 > “SD card 1 total capacity: 64 G” In English the correct translation is 64 Gb instead of 64 G. In Menu > System settings > About X5 > “Total no. of songs: 900songs” please add a space after number 900)

Please, write me if you need my help. I will you explain if you don't understand something

4. But there's separate options for file name and track name display...
10. Repeat repeats the folder when Play through folder is off but repeats the whole card's worth of tracks when Play through folder is on.
11. Apparently 10 of your songs aren't playable by the X5 because "About X5" displays the total number of *playable* songs.

You don't understand what i mean. On main display X5 shows Album name, Track Artist and Track Title. The option in menu “File name display” change how to display Track Title on main display: either file name or title of track. So the correct meaning in English of this option is “Track title display” or “Track name display” (instead of “File name display”)

10. When I play by folder, and “Play through folder” option is on, I set play mode to “Repeat” but it doesn’t repeat the folder. Instead it changes to next folder. Please correct “Repeat” mode.

I understand that it repeats the whole card's worth of tracks when Play through folder is on. But this option is useless this way. There's no need to repeat say 6000 composition. It will take a month of listening till it will repeat from the begining. So i think that the option to repeat one album or one folder or one playlist is more useful and correct. If i like to listen to one album repeaed i will choose Repeat Mode. If i like to listen to one track i will choose Repeat One Mode. But if i like to play all folders continiously i will choose Continious Mode

I've tested and all of my files are playable. There's a bug in counting of total number of songs. Please check by yourself: update library and remember the number it show, then check the number in About X5 >Total no. of songs. It will be different

If I may make a suggestion that might help them figure out what the bug is, check to see if you have 10 of a specific file type and/or attribute. For example maybe it doesn't count WMA files correctly or something along those lines. I have some experience with software QA, so this is where my first instinct would point me.
