FiiO Team,

I hear 300ms audio latency when M11 Plus ESS is in USB DAC mode connected to my laptop, please advise.
  • M11 Plus ESS firmware 1.0.2 (latest at the moment)
  • Windows 11 with FiiO audio driver 5.30.0.18122 2/28/2022
  • DAP connected directly to USB 3.2 Gen 2 port using high quality cable
  • Latency does not depend on bitrate, 300ms for 16bit 44.1k and 32bit 384k
  • FiiO control panel in windows shows Input Latency 11.67ms and Output Latency 8.50ms, buffer size and safe mode do not affect the 300ms audio latency
Dear friend,

How did you test the delay? Which tool are you using? Thanks in advanced!

Best regards

There are videos that allow to measure the real audio delay pretty accurately. For example:

Laptop speakers reproduce sound with 0ms delay while USB DAC mode shows at least 300ms.
Moreover, when I watch a video with people speaking in front of the camera it feels like the audio is coming from a different source because the speech does not match the lips movement. Because of this delay USB DAC mode is not very usable for movies or games.

Hope you can find the cause of the problem and provide an estimate for the fix, 300ms is too much for a hardware limitation, looks like a firmware issue. I just purchased M11 Plus and USB DAC mode is essential for me because I use it 50% of the time.

@FiiO
I'm hearing random clippings on an MQA (green?) playback from M11+ ESS (running the latesr official firmware). I know it's not the file since it occurs randomly in the song. How can I fix this?

Dear friend,

I am not familar with the test you provided in the video. But we will also report to the engineer.
And you could try to set the system output samping rate to 192k to see whether it helps?

Best regards

Dear friend,

Which output are you using? And does the issue happen in certain MQA file? If yes, you could send the music to us for checking for you.

Best regards

I tried various sampling rates including 24bit/192kHz suggested for other FiiO players but the delay was the same 300ms. I am sure the engineers will be able to reproduce it, the video test is very straightforward and based on math, it is the best way to test real audio delay.
If you doubt that it is very accurate, I can record audio+video of M11 Plus ESS DAC sound reproduction in 240FPS (1 image each 4ms) and it will prove that the sound will be played with ~300seconds delay.

I had tried 3.5mm PO, 4.4 PO, as well as Coax out. All three had random noise pops. You can hear it if you listen carefully and can easily be missed if you're just casually listening. Basically any MQA file I have I can send one or two files. Should I send it to support@fiio.com? But since I experience it with every MQA file I wonder if it'll help. Thanks!

Below is a slow motion video at 240 FPS to demonstrate the FiiO M11 Plus ESS 300ms audio latency in USB DAC mode.
On the monitor you can see a video clip (https://youtu.be/TjAa0wOe5k4) that plays a short sound at the mark "0". The cursor indicates the time interval from the position "0" (-500ms, -400ms, -300ms, -200ms, -100ms, 0ms, +100ms, +200ms, +300ms, +400ms, +500ms).
During the first half of the recorded video the sound is reproduced using FiiO M11 Plus ESS in USB DAC mode. The sound is played at the mark "0", however we can hear it only when the cursor reaches 300ms mark (remember this is a slow motion video, real action is 8x faster).
The second half of the recorded video demonstrates that the laptop internal speakers reproduce the sound at the mark "0" with no latency.

Would you mind try another Wifi or restart the player to check again?
