[FiiO KA17] Mini desktop-class amp, flagship dongle is officially released!
Jan 19, 2024 at 5:01 AM Post #31 of 689
Hi Fiio, is there anyway to use the KA17 in Tabletop mode with the full 650 mw power even when we don't have an external power supply attached?
Also how would you compare the dac section of the KA17 to the KA5 dac section?
Any plans to still release the KA7?
Thanks very much!
Dear friend,

Hi, if the power supply from the USB port of the connected device is high enough, you could get 650mW power even when not connecting the external power supply to the KA17.
The KA7 has been renamed to KA17.
As for the comparison between KA5 and KA17, we will update when the engineer share to us.

Best regards

Hi Fiio,
Thanks very much for your response!
Just a few more last questions.
Would most android phones and the Nintendo Switch provide enough power for the KA17 to get 650 mW even when not connected to an external power supply?
And if we are able to get 650 mW when only connected to an android phone or Nintendo Switch do you think the power consumption level would still be at a practical level where it won't deplete our source's battery to unpractical levels?
I was also wondering, is the ES9069Q dac chip suppose to be considered as a higher tier model chip compared to the ES9038Q2m/ES9039Q2m chips?
Also a last question is for the current KA5, is the dac mode in class AB suppose to provide higher sound quality compared to being in class H mode? Because the dac uses more current in AB mode i'm presuming that means better audio quality too?
Thanks again for your replies. I'm super excited for the KA17 and I love the KA5 so was wondering would this be a worthy upgrade in most every way. Plz keep up the great work!

If the 650mW desktop mode is independent of an external power supply, it'll work on any device but will burn through your battery faster. The ES9069Q is meant to be a direct update/upgrade from those chips. The two modes the KA5 offers are just low gain/high gain AFAIK. Sound quality should be about the same (there is some discussion on this) but high gain mode may be required for headphones with higher impedance.

Sorry, lying about the DAC work mode, a power saving mode which adjusts power according to sampling rate. Have no idea whether SQ is affected of lower sample rate input. Good question. Probably.

Dear friend,

Hi,
1. According to the tested from the engineer, some mobile phones could provide enough power for the KA17 to get 650mW output. But they haven't test NS yet.
2. All the three chips are dual channels chip, but the ES9069Q is flagship one.
3. You could try to compare it by yourself. According to our test, the other parameters has no difference in this two modes. So theoretically the sound quality will not be affected as well.

Best regards

Dear friend,

During the development, considering the higher cost and bigger size may casued by adding line out, the line out isn't added. But we will still report your feedback to our product manager. Thanks for the kind feedback.

Best regards
I'm interested in a USB dongle with line-out capability for connecting to my office's active desktop speakers.

Currently owning a Q7, I'd appreciate a compact device to substitute the Mac Mini/iPhone DAC, especially one that supports MQA. I wonder how many others share this specific need.

I totally agree. I was just thinking today that in order for the KA17 to be used as a full-fledged desktop dac for me it would need a true Line out so I can connect it to my powered bookshelf speakers on my desk. Otherwise when I'm on my desktop with my PC I can only use it as my headphone dac/amp, which is a shame.

I'm using an LG G8X phone and i'm wondering if it has enough power out of it's usb port to run the ka17 in full 650mW power. I'm also really curious how much the power draw is on this thing when it's in 650mW mode. I've been using the KA5 with my HD800 using the 4.4 mm balanced out at times and they work quite well together. If I can use the KA17 for the same purposes but with the extra 650mW power it would be very interesting.

Hi Fiio, thanks for the responses again.
It's funny, regarding the class AB vs class H mode for the KA5. I was doing a lot of back and forth comparison and I "believe" I actually do hear a bit of difference. I seem to hear a bit more micro details and transcients when it's in AB mode. But since I find it's a healthy habit to be self skeptical in this hobby, I'm not sure if this is just placebo on my part. lol And if there is a difference we're just talking about a few % points of difference.

I have just tested it with an iPhone 15 with desktop mode on, it works just fine, but of course, the power draw is also significantly higher when the desktop mode is turned on, which is to be expected

Does the PEQ and FiiO Control work with an iPhone on KA17? I have an iPhone 15 Pro.
Unfortunately no, i tried to add the device but KA17 is not in the app, i guess it is only for android at the moment

Dear friend,

FiiO Control iOS version does not support KA17. But you could adjust the setting via an Android device, and the setting will be saved in the KA17.

Best regards

Hi Fiio. Does the KA17 has 1 or 2 ESS chips?
